He and I talked about the weight of his drums and how to offset it. If you have it made he said he can put some holes in the rim to hold a sling of some sort.
Me, not wanting more holes in any instrument than necessary picked up a cheaparsed guitar strap I had around the house. Tied it into the area where the brass tuning ring goes and wear it either over one shoulder, or like a bandoleir across the chest.
This allows several benefits for my style of playing. 1. I can let go of the drum and grab a whistle and not have to set the drum down. 2. If I do have to set the drum down I have a strap with which to lower it gently to the stand (That I have to make/buy.) 3. I can carry it around on my back during events if I choose. (so far I have not because I put it back in it's bag)
It's something to think about to offset the weight vs size issue however.
Haha, we've had this chat before, himself and I. I know the Riverdance chap plays with a strap, but I suspect I'll get stronger results if I play a smaller drum and don't stand.
Have you got a blue heron case for it? They're fantastic for keeping one's drum across one's shoulder and out of mischief (I put an antler through a bodhrán head once).
We're entering into a working it out phase. He'll make something, hand it over to me for a little while, and I'll modify from there. Anything I don't want he can sell to somebody else; win win, like.
It's amusing you mention the case. I've been needing one for a while now and decided after next payday to start researching. Now I have a starting place.
I think you're correct with the smaller drum though. I can't wait to see what ends up being right for you.
Yer man will be out at the Scottish festival this weekend; I'd thought he'd said he'd have stock, but now I can't recall. It will be interesting indeed.
