That 99 versus 1 Occupy Everywhere bit

There's a reason I eschew making politically motivated posts more often than I make them: I'll own I'm grossly under informed. I don't want to add to the static and hiss by chucking yet another half-baked theory based upon something somebody might have said in or out of context; I don't think that's part of the solution in the least. There's enough ( Read more... )

This. Times about a hundred. Did you see the thing from Daily Kos that went viral today? It actually sums up my position better than I can - mostly because I'm too livid to express my thoughts rationally at the moment. Especially when 13-year-olds are posting screeds with "getadamnjobyouhippie.org" at the bottom.

Here's the link, if you're inclined: http://www.dailykos.com/story/2011/10/12/1025555/-Open-Letter-to-that-53-Guy

And I'm working up my own thoughts on the subject, but right now, I'd rather watch stupid TV shows and drink weird adult beverages (I'm not sure why Woodchuck thought that Pumpkin Cider was a good idea. I suspect I'll be giving away the remaining five bottles) than get myself all worked into a tizzy that I can't fully articulate in words. Because I always seem to end up at, "Because FUCK YOU, that's why!" Which is not productive, or thoughtful.

I did see that; thanks very much for posting the link.

I nearly got into a row with a complete stranger via Facebook on this score today, and this is something I Do Not Do, 'cos... janey bloody mercy, we can't truly understand another person's point of view via that medium. It's daft. Apparently, I'm a bit on edge about it all. I don't like it being assumed that my circumstances are borne of my own sin - and that's, sadly, what I think it comes down to: sin.

This fellow at Facebook...it was myself and another friend of mine disagreeing with him. Her experience is that she's got degrees, and yet she's spent the past five years looking for work. She's an event planner, so what does your man do? Says he 'have you applied to hotels'? As though somebody who studied hospitality at school would not have considered this first. Really, mate? I mean fucking reallyAaaaargh. What I've learnt through my own experience is we're all nearer to disaster than we realise - and this isn't doomsaying. Fortunately, most of us will never encounter that ( ... )

"Addled oversimplification" well put.

Something is off when you can work hard and not make it.

I've got a mate in the seisiún scene here whose answer to hard economic times is: start a business, grow it, and thrive! What's wrong with you? I did it!

And I admire that, mate, I really do, but I couldn't sell my soul to the devil. This is not a deficit in my character, really. It simply is. Now then, could I go to work for your growing and thriving business and make it better by creating branding that makes it memorable to potential clients. Absolutely, when can I start? You don't even need to provide me a desk - I'm killer at working virtually.

Only, would he see that counter argument as valid? Or would he see it as another excuse made to lay about and lament my sorry circumstances? I don't know.

Here's hoping that what will come of this is a true understanding that we cannot absolutely fathom how life is for our fellow humans, so relying upon ourselves as examples is fallacious.
