I've been on the other end of rejection letters multiple times--i.e., the one sending "thank you for your time but no" missives to literature PhDs. Earlier this year I decided not to use mail merge and instead typed 127 applicants' names into individual rejection E-mails. Granted, I didn't retype the E-mail and they had no idea, but I certainly felt like I humanized my side of the process a little. :\
Temporary helps may be google Quality ratings (LeapForce is one company, Lionsbridge or something is the other) or selling work on Etsy.
Whilst working temp jobs through AppleOne, Vernon found his current job through LinkedIn -- he was contacted (by the woman who ultimately became his boss) via the messaging service for an interview.
