Oscars Music as Speech Ender

The Oscars are over. I didn’t watch them. I caught a portion while my parents were watching. People have complained about how long they were. 4 hours. I agree. That’s long. Yet I saw winner after winner being shooed off the stage. You’d think that with all the rushing of acceptance speeches the Oscars would be shorter ( Read more... )

I think you're dead right. Little phospherescent flashes of humanity lose their pathos when you watch them on television again and again, especially in the same night. Now if only this understanding can be applied to other, non-teary-eyed, non-oscar aspects of life. I've been tempted, more than once, to carry around a tape recorder with swelling end-credits music so that I can cut off all manner of speechifying. Speechifying is an especially bad occupational hazard for grad students.

And on a completely unrelated note, err, hi. Nice to meet you; you've got a fascinating journal. I'm guessing you ran across me via cobalt999 or forcemajeure, but since I'm a needlessly paranoid jerk, I thought I'd ask how you ran across me.

I wonder how the Oscars' music's composer feels about this use of their work. They must have known that they were commissioned to make something both beautiful and loud enough to drown out the sounds of weeping gratitude. On one hand, I can see them being somewhat disgruntled. On the other, I can also see them setting to work with sadistic pleasure.

From one needlessly paranoid jerk to another: I understand. Yeah, basically I just see you around all the journals I like, making comments I like. The ones you mentioned and maybe some others. I'd never visited your journal. Then I did and crapped my pants laughing. I’ve never had a laxative on my friends list. Now I do. You're welcome to put that on your resume.
