The good folks at Procter and Gamble have offered some "healthy" eating tips on their Playtex website. It's clearly geared towards adolescent girls. Maybe some people think I sound shrill or strident about this stuff, but I cannot help but be appalled ( Read more... )

You're not being strident at all - these are AWFUL! Talk about a recipe for an eating disorder.

You should post this in a feminist community and call in the cavalry with the company's contact info.

I know it- I can't imagine having to raise a daughter with this stuff out there. Hell, it isn't even that easy for boys now either.

I can't decide if it makes me more angry or sad. Rachel included some comments posted by girls on the site- they're all so stuck in this way of thinking. One girl said she was only 92lbs but still felt fat. WTF.

It really pisses me off. I had a student, sixth grade, 11 years old, very tall and slim for her age. She knows the calorie counts of everything she eats, and won't participate in any social activity that is food related. Everybody on the faculty is aware of this, and everybody is "worried" about it, but nobody but me is willing it call it a disorder yet. She's been like this for two years and hasn't gotten any taller since she was nine. Of course, I can't bring it up, because if I do I'm the deluded fat lady. I stopped trying about 6 months ago.
