A failed experiment, actually. Scientists had been working on something or other, and something went horribly wrong. As the story goes.

This place; Adstringendum. Compression. All the worlds are being compressed into one spot, leading people from different times and worlds to arrive here. Like yourself. Although more recently, some sort of reverse compression has occurred, and buildings from around the world have shown up. The Great Wall of China for instance.

And you are, unfortunately, stuck here with the rest of us, until the Animus deem it time for you to leave. Even then, no one really knows when they'll be sent home. But don't worry. They keep us entertained; Every two weeks an event happens. It could quite be anything from Giant Turkeys upon Thanksgiving week, or more recently, being pulled into a secluded building wherein a single door lead to four different ballrooms. I suppose it had been a Christmas Celebration.
