I get the privilege of reading hundreds of notecard responses that are submitted by my peers in Gen 300. Sometimes I am blown away by the things they have to say.

A few class periods ago two profs had a debate on politically relevant issues. The Pro-life concept was related to war, the death penalty and even birth control. I find the sum of these ( Read more... )

I don't think that there is such a thing as sex without the possibility of pregnancy. Margaret and I both know people who have gotten pregnant on the pill--in some cases more than once, and in one case every child that the couple conceived was conceived in spite of the pill. That in mind, my attitude about birth control, and the pill specifically, is if a person is meant to get pregnant, then that person WILL get pregnant, regardless of any measures she takes. Human interference does not trump God's will. Therefore, on a so-called "prudential" level, I have no objection to birth control given the apparent futility of it.
I hadn't ever considered the environmental/physiological implications of the pill that you point out. I'd be interesting in learning more about that should the risk actually exist.

Take a calcium supplement. Calcium supplements are helpful for many people, but especially if you have lactose intolerance and are unable to eat dairy products.
Try probiotics. Probiotics are living organisms present in your intestines that help maintain a healthy digestive system. Probiotics are also available as active or "live" cultures in some yogurts and as supplements in capsule form. These are sometimes used for gastrointestinal conditions such as diarrhea and irritable bowel syndrome. They may also help your body digest lactose. Probiotics are generally considered safe if used properly and may be worth a try if other methods don't help.

Junior year I took Philosophy of the Environment with Prof. Kok, and ended up writing a big paper on population control. I really wish I still had access to it.
