For two years now I have lived with and shared a bedroom with other women who like to sleep with-sometimes cannot sleep at all without-a loud humming fan. This is not an uncommon practice in our culture. I know plenty of people who confess to benefiting from or requiring these little white-noise machines ( Read more... )

oh my lands, we are honestly like soul twins...I was just going to write to you about your comment on my blog and how knowing that you feel the same way talks me back from the edge a bit, knowing there are others who get just as outraged by such details...and then you post this.

Jordan sleeps with a fan, and he has his whole life...his mother allowed it. Now he is completely dependent on it and refuses to sleep without it. It has been the subject of the absolute worst fight we've ever had. He cannot understand why the "soothing whir" can be anything but cathartic, when in actuality it is drowning out the very things that bring me peace in the sleeping and waking moments. He thinks I should easily conform to his needs while refusing to acknowledge the validity of mine...the most frustrating thing in the world.

People use different things to sleep. In truly quiet areas (like deep in the Northwoods) I am amazed at the constant ringing in my ears. Too much of life spent sleeping near trains and busy highways. Have you ever gotten on a mountain above a city ? (try Lookout Mountain in TN) The constant drone a city makes is amazing. In light of all of this, I now prefer earplugs, not earbuds, for sleeping. Knocks out 28 decibels. Fans are addicting.
