Today my 8th grade Language Arts class studied this poem. I liked this one and chose it to study because it reminded me a bit of Iowa where I just was and it also reminded me of Albuquerque where winter doesn't necessarily mean snow ( Read more... )

Laura,
Thank you for reading my post.
This poem is beautiful, It reminds me of my Grandpa's farm. After hearing about how your studdents didn't get and disliked the poem I thought of myself when I was in 8th grade. I also disliked the stuff I read in english and such other subjects. It seemed like a bore because it didn't fit into my bubble it seemed far off. I think when kids get older and have more wisdom of experience they will want to open their minds more. The more poeple experience new things the more they understand it isn't all about your own little world. There is a much bigger and brighter picture.

Laura, I am sorry the assignment did not receive the enthusiasm you hoped for. I think when I was in middle school I tended to enjoy poetry, but maybe I'm just an odd duck. But I do think that even if your students do not enjoy these assignments, they are still important to have them do. Poetry can be very confusing at first, but perhaps the more they are exposed to it, the more sense it will make and the more they will be able to feel connected in some way. But even if they never feel connected, it's still your job to try to help them broaden their horizons a bit and expose them to new things. I hope next week goes better.

the song/lyric idea is really good. keep it up. don't fret about the poem. maybe try something more local... or age appropriate. or have them bring a poem in. i agree with what carmela said.
