Biography:
In the beginning, there was Kwon Yuri, and she was good. Twelve minutes after that, there was Kwon Yoona, and it was better.
To say that their parents were surprised at the unexpected good fortune of having not one but two daughters on their first go would be a gross understatement of the fact. They were born on the fifth of December to a no-nonsense man of the law and his bubbly wife, a former beauty titleist. Their childhood can only be described as 'conventional' - there's no story to be found there. They were equally loved and equally cherished and lived a firmly middle-class existence where nothing was too little or too much. There were - and are - a few times when their family is thrust into the limelight, owing to the nature of their father's occupation, but those instances are few and far between.
The story is not in their upbringing as twins, but in their existence (and coexistence) as twins. Yoona endured every cliché connected to being a multiple: the identical outfits, people being unable to tell them apart, sometimes being lectured for an hour for getting into the begonias until their mother realised that she was speaking not to the perpetrator but her double (Yuri being long gone, hanging out at the playground playing kickball with the neighbourhood boys) (Yoona had kept silent through the entire tirade because she was partly responsible anyway - it was her puppy after all, not Yul's). She also delighted in having the most loyal of partners in crime, a best friend, a soulmate in the most literal sense of the word, someone to keep her secrets, someone to develop a secret language with.
They chucked the duplicate fashion at the first possible opportunity, and with this came an assertion of identity. Middle school found Yuri diving headfirst into newfound partial freedom: imagine not having to be driven to school anymore! Being able to walk home alone! Participate in clubs and meet with friends after school for ddeokbokki or ice cream! Yuri was an unstoppable tornado, always had been, and Yoona... Yoona has always had the more easygoing nature by far, more comparable to a river that bends to the will of the bank than a force of nature. She goes where fate takes her, compelled by little more than impulse or whatever happens to feel like a good idea at the time.
In high school, they grew into their gangly frames, and their skin cleared up considerably, revealing the beauty of their mother hidden underneath. They became popular, and were showered with attention that sometimes bordered on reverence. Boys could hardly believe that one such exquisite creature existed, less so that there were two of them - Yuri flourished in it, of course, discovering the joys of a kiss-first-ask-later lifestyle of parties and Seoul nightlife. Yoona, for her part, didn't jump into her passions so much as she wandered into them, and to this day not a single one of them has been an icky boy. Yoona's first and longest-standing relationship is the one she has with Food, followed closely by Art, and then by Being Good at Art. She joined the drama club on a whim in her second year, first working backstage in makeup and costume, and then onstage playing support, and finally, a coveted lead in senior year: Shakespeare's Juliet.
It's that same art that she pursues at Yonsei University now - in her own words, "studying how to be dramatic, even if Yul is the one with the bigger flair for the dramatic". They're older now, and wiser, and couldn't be more different than night and day. Yoona pledged Sigma Kappa with Yuri, and thinks that Greek life is "okay". It's nice to be surrounded by sisters, but let's face it - she'll always love Yuri best of them all.
Personality:
People think that twins have to keep to a certain standard. If one is wild, the other is tame; if one tends towards mischief, the other must always be staid. This couldn't be any less true for the Kwon sisters. Yoona isn't the whirlwind phenomenon that her sister Yuri is, but she knows how to have fun, and she does so with almost as much wild abandon as her sister.
Pure, clean, vibrant, friendly, hardworking. Fun-loving, good-humoured, sweet and outgoing. At first glance, Yoona appears to be the embodiment of an ideal. Where Yuri burns with white-hot flame, Yoona radiates the warmth of a glowing candle: inviting people closer gradually, instead of dazzling them with blinding light.
She laughs with a recklessly open heart (one almost as wide as her alligator mouth!), unrestrained and carefree. She can be mischievous, and very easily amused. (Her favourite prank? Pulling the ol' switcheroo with Yul, of course! That never gets old!)
That being said, she can be sensitive, and while she isn't easily swayed by public opinion (her stubborn streak is miles wide and continually extending), she can be affected by it tremendously. It's simply not possible to be harder on Yoona than she already is on herself. Relentlessly driven, at times remarkably intense, she can be fiercely competitive, and her only rival is her last best performance.
Her delicate figure masks the truth of two things: she eats like a sumo wrestler, and she's stronger than she looks. Sports like lacrosse, biking or running keep her fit - one of her life ambitions is to join a triathlon.
Like her sister, she's a diehard romantic, and her heart goes soft for chick flicks, trendy dramas, and young adult novels. Despite her lack of active interest in men, she goes out on dates with (almost) everyone who asks. Seeing as she merely wanders into her passions, she may very well just stumble on The One, right?
Sibling rivalry? What's that? Yoona believes that she and Yuri are the exact same soul in two bodies, and it's hard to be jealous of a piece of yourself. She will always be Yuri's foremost defender, staunchest supporter, and premiere cheerleader.
