i've had my point and shoot digital canon camera for almost 3 yrs, and it is unfortunately wearing out on me. i need to get a new camera before my cairo trip (i'll be bringing a ncie SLR but want a compact digital as well). my biggest issues are photo delays -- i realize most cameras have these, but my current camera is ridiculously bad at this and ( Read more... )

You KNOW I can help you!!! :) What is your budget? I had the same issue as you and went with the Fuji F30. It's flash is a bit bright, but I put some medical tape on it and it works perfect now! It's amazing in terms of low noise levels and has a long battery life. The refresh is very quick too. There are better cameras, but my budget was a max of $300. Are you willing to spend more? If not, go with the FujiF30... this is coming from a Canon girl!!! Let me know if you are willing to spend more. I can help you find a great p/s. Don't forget to read ALL the in-depth reviews at www.dpreview.com

Hugs,
Arie

i totally thought of you and couldnt find your email address! i'm a canon girl myself, and am finding that i'm a bit hesitant to switch brands -- but at the same time, its mostly due to familiarity (after all, it is my canon that is now dying on me). i'll look into the fuji. my limit is also $300-$325. i'm on dpreview now...

A lot of the new cameras have gotten much better at delay time. NYT had a great article last year comparing things like delay, but I can't find it anymore. It was by their regular tech guy, if you want to hunt around. I also love the reviews on Steve's Digicam website. They are Thorough with a capital T but all from the same writer so they are easy to compare.

Fujis have great indoor lighting if you plan to primarily take pics of friends and art. The NYT guy noted this in particular, and Unrepeatable digs hers.

Panasonics have a nice image stabilizer.

I love my dual-lens Kodak because it has a wide angle, which is ideal for nature shots and other times when you can't back up anymore to squeeze it all in, but it does poorly indoors. The brand has switched from toy-store junk to pretty cool innovations.
