i've been experiencing a run of technology-fueled bad luck. a couple of weeks ago, my 4yr old laptop, which had been showing signs of dying, bit the bullet, kicked the bucket, went to the laptop heaven in the sky, passed on, croaked, found greener pastures, left this corporeal life, now sings with the angels. at the same time, my work laptop ( Read more... )

When I was in school, the Sonys seemed pretty stable. IBMs were also great, but now that Lenovo has taken over, I don't know if they are changing. They were supposed to keep the same engineers and manufacturers, but that could have changed over the last year or two. Dells went down a lot, but for their price you can afford to replace them more often.

Of course, you said no Macs, but you could get a Macbook Pro, which can run full-on Windows, and switch between platforms whenever you want to slowly get used to the Mac. Sorry--no further Mac evangelizing.

My husband was recently looking for a new laptop and sadly discovered that most of the new ones (all different brands) make a terrible whining noise due to the new Intel chip a lot of them have. This is something you might want to look into during your purchase.
