Summary: No one ever really knew who Jaejoong was. Not until he met them. Now trading sunlight for moonlight, he and his lover must face their true reality.
1.
When Jaejoong woke up, the window was closed and locked. He had assumed that the wind had closed the window. The only thing that he had forgotten, was that wind, couldn’t lock windows.
When Jaejoong looked at his alarm clock, he noticed that he was going to be late, for the first time in years. Jaejoong quickly drank a cup of orange juice and ate a piece of bread, leaving the dishes unwashed in the sink.
After locking the door and double checking he started walking the same road again, greeting the same bakery owner. The only thing different from his routine was that Jaejoong was now thinking about the words that Kim Junsu had said.
Jaejoong didn’t think that Junsu was lying about coming to school, but he did wonder why Junsu suddenly decided to come to school again. He was so lost in his own thoughts that Jaejoong didn’t notice the voices that usually irritated him every morning.
When Jaejoong finally stepped inside the classroom, he noticed that everyone was crowded at the back of that class, just beside his usual seat. There was a boy seated in the middle, on the table; the centre of the attention.
Jaejoong didn’t even have to guess. It was Kim Junsu, the same one that said to his ‘lover’ that he was going to school. ‘I hoped that he was lying about coming…’ Jaejoong thought. Junsu seemed to have noticed Jaejoong, because now, Junsu was shouting Jaejoong’s name and waving both arms at him, with a big bright smile that only Junsu could produce.
“Jaejoong hyung! You finally came!” Junsu said, more like shouted while jumping off from the table and walking towards Jaejoong. ‘I think that I was the one supposed to say that.’ Jaejoong thought while Junsu put hid arm around his shoulders and dragged Jaejoong to his seat.
They both could hear whispers about both of them being friends or something like that, Junsu had just ignored them but Jaejoong was more self conscious.
“Junsu-sshi, can you please remove your arm around me?” Jaejoong asked with the most polite words that he could find in his shocked state; he was quite proud of himself.
“I’m sorry” Junsu said quietly, just a little bit louder than a soft whisper. Even though they never really talked to each other, Junsu seemed sad with the polite tone that Jaejoong used to talk to him.
The teacher came and another lecture began, Jaejoong pulled his notebook and his pencil case from his bag and started writing the notes down. Junsu just leaned his chin on his right hand, turned to Jaejoong and stared at Jaejoong with a blank expression. Jaejoong finally noticed that Junsu was sitting beside him, at the spot that no one wanted to occupy.
At first Jaejoong was happy that Junsu wanted to sit beside him, but then his logical thoughts seemed to be the most correct ‘Junsu probably sat here because there are no seats in class anymore’.
The next teacher entered the classroom, everyone was changing their notebooks or throwing paper balls at each other. Junsu just stayed with the same position, chin on his hand and eyes looking at Jaejoong.
‘More like looking through me’ He thought. At first Jaejoong presumed that Junsu was looking at him just because he was curious, but now Jaejoong could not see a reason why.
Jaejoong tried hard to ignore Junsu’s stare, writing down the notes from the white board. When he suddenly felt the same presence that he felt yesterday. He turned to his left, where the window was and he only saw a big tree, a court and nothing else, there was absolutely no one outside. Sighing a little he turned back again, but then he saw Junsu.
Junsu was not looking at him anymore. He was looking at the tree outside the class, exactly where Jaejoong was looking at just a second ago. Unlike Jaejoong, Junsu looked like he saw something, because he was wearing a mischievous grin.
Jaejoong looked back at the tree but he still saw nothing. Turning his head to the white board and sighing again at the same moment, he saw Junsu smiling at him.
“Jaejoong hyung, do you want to go to the movies tomorrow?” Junsu whispered trying to be quiet so the teacher didn’t hear.
“Why?” Was the only word that Jaejoong could think of, it was the first time that he was being invited to the cinema. A long time ago he used to go alone, but he would always bump into a classmate that would make fun of him; after that he decided that he wasn’t going to the cinema anymore.
“I don’t know, there’s a new film that is going to be released tomorrow, something about supernatural things I think.” Junsu after saying that, grabbed his backpack and fumbled on the side pocket. After a while he handed a pamphlet to Jaejoong.
On the pamphlet there was an image of a woman with a scared face and beside her a man smiling, his teeth showing, the man was a vampire. ‘How stupid, making use of these unreal myths to make a film.’ Jaejoong thought.
“So hyung, do you want to go?” This time Junsu said a little bit too loud, drawing the teacher’s attention to himself.
“Kim Junsu-sshi, is there anything that you would like to share with the class?” The teacher asked with no intention of wanting to know what Junsu was talking about.
“I’m sorry teacher, I’ll be quiet.” Junsu said quickly. The teacher turned back to the white board and started explaining the subject again. Junsu turned to Jaejoong, who was looking at Junsu, and made an ‘I’ll talk to you later’ hand motion.
The last two classes before lunch passed incredibly slowly. When the bell finally rang, half of the students dashed out, and the other half formed a circle on Junsu’s desk. There were girls asking him to eat with them, boys inviting him to play soccer, some of them even inviting him to the library, just to be alone with Junsu.
‘Junsu is really popular, even if he doesn’t come to school, I wonder why’ Jaejoong thought. He grabbed his lunch box and stood up, with the intention of going to the rooftop and eat in silence. But Junsu quickly excused himself and to jog over to Jaejoong.
“Hyung, let’s eat together on the rooftop!” Junsu said, holding Jaejoong’s right arm and dragging him to the stairs. Once on the rooftop, Jaejoong was careful enough to lock the door to avoid uninvited guests.
They sat on a corner facing the open court, on the court there were some people playing sports, other just chasing around each other.
“So hyung, about the movies, you’re coming right?” Junsu asked, his body rocking right left.
“It’s a movie about vampires, it’s stupid.” Jaejoong said, not being afraid to scare Junsu with his honest and blunt reply. Jaejoong opened his lunch box and grabbed his chopsticks.
“Do you have anything against vampires?” Junsu wondered since Jaejoong said that it was stupid. But there were good reviews from the movies criticizers, and they were really hard to please.
“I don’t know, I just don’t believe in them.” For Jaejoong, vampires and mythical creatures does not exist, it was impossible. Feeding from blood and dying when exposed to the sun, all of it was stupid. The only thing that he thought that it was the closest to reality was the Easter Bunny, only because bunnies exist, though they don’t hand out chocolate.
“I have to tell that to my hyung,” Junsu said, his laugh muffling what he said, but it was clear enough to Jaejoong to hear. ‘What does his hyung have to do with this?’ Jaejoong thought, using his chopsticks to dig into his food.
“Hyung, you cooked this? It looks delicious, can I have some?” Junsu said forgetting his semi open bread and practically drooling over Jaejoong’s home made food.
Jaejoong nodded a little and handed his chopsticks to Junsu, who eagerly took them and picked a bit of the kimchi that was in the lunch box. After eating it he made a surprised face.
“Hyung! Is really good!” Junsu said returning the chopsticks to Jaejoong “Tomorrow when we go to the movies, bring a share for five! I’m going to bring my dongsaeng.” he said getting his cell phone from his pant’s back pocket and texting, probably to his donsaeng.
‘But I didn’t even agree on going…’ They continued to eat and talk about random things. Once that the bell rang again, they returned to class. Jaejoong didn’t feel being watched anymore, and he was disappointed. ‘I guess it was just a psychological thing.’ Junsu didn’t stare at Jaejoong either, he was rather quiet and focused on taking notes.
The last bell rang and everyone was dashing out of the classroom, biding goodbyes and talking about too much homework. “Hyung, I’ll text you where we’ll be meeting for the movies, even though we’re together going after school. It’s for you to check how you’re going to get back home.”
After that, Junsu walked out from the classroom, claiming that he couldn’t be late for his date. Jaejoong walked calmly out of the school building, passing by some students that were practising sports and others watering the plants.
Walking to his work place, the beautiful coffee shop, he greeted the same cashier as the day before and changed his clothes. But this time, he went to the boss’s room, knocking the door before opening it, he entered the room. The room wasn’t really big, but big enough to fit comfortably a large desk, leather sofa and a small coffee table in front of the sofa.
“What is it Jaejoong? Do you need anything?” Jaejoong was not the type to come to the boss without a reason, he only came in this office twice. Once in the job interview, the other to pick up his uniform.
“Boss, can I ask for a day off tomorrow?” Jaejoong wasn’t really sure how to act, because it was the first time doing this. The boss too seemed surprised since he stopped looking at the computer screen and typing to look at Jaejoong.
“A day off tomorrow? Yes of course, it’s the first time you ask this Jaejoong, of course I’ll let you.” Jaejoong let the breath that he didn’t know he’d been holding out. He was so nervous, and afraid that the boss wouldn’t let him take a day off and to disappoint Junsu.
Bowing, he left the room to serve the costumers. This time he served the downstairs place, but he was anxious because tomorrow, he was going out with a new made friend, a friend that he had been longing for.
When his shift ended Jaejoong came to the changing room, changed and grabbed his clothes. Checking his cell phone for the time, he noticed that his shift ended a bit later than the normal. Another thing that caught his attention was an e-mail from an unknown number, he opened the e-mail and it said:
‘Hyung! Is Junsu \(≧∇≦)/
We’re going to the D shopping mall
I’m going to go back with my dongsaeng by car!!
Don’t forget the food!! Or else my dongsaeng is going
To kill me! TT^TT’
Jaejoong did not bother answering the mail, but he did start thinking about what to bring tomorrow. Now, instead of going to his house, Jaejoong was going to the supermarket to buy the ingredients to make food, and he decided to make dokbokki.
He bought everything he needed, but he wondered why he needed to make food for five people, Junsu was bringing only one donsaeng right? When he got out from the supermarket, the sky was already completely dark.
Jaejoong walked to the shortcut that he walked through everyday, and he was surprised when he saw a shiny sports car enter the old mansion gates. ‘Maybe, they’re going to buy that mansion.’ Jaejoong thought. It was a sleek black AudiR8. How did Jaejoong know? Well, he secretly has a thing for cars.
The car parked not far from the gates that were automatic, for Jaejoong’s surprise. Jaejoong could see someone walking out from the mansion to the car. The car’s door opened and two figures came out.
The first one, a tall man, with black straight hair, the second one was using his school’s uniform and his hairstyle and bag were just like Junsu’s. ‘Jae, you must be really tired, there’s no way that’s Junsu.’
He looked at one of the various mansion windows and saw a person looking at him. When Jaejoong noticed the person, he also noticed that he was having that sensation of being watched and protected again. ‘Strange, I didn’t notice this before. I must be growing used to it.’
Jaejoong continued walking to his house, the supposed Junsu long forgotten and a new question was in his mind: Who was that person watching him? And why he didn’t notice it before? Reaching his house, he opened the door quietly, careful to not disturb the neighbours.
Taking his shoes off and putting the groceries on the table he intended to wash the dishes that he left unwashed in the morning first, before preparing the food. But surprisingly, when he went to the sink, there was nothing. No dishes and not a sign that a dirty plate was even placed there. Making a confused face, he tried to remember when he washed the dishes. Since he couldn’t remember anything he just assumed that he had washed them unconsciously before going to school.
He carefully prepared the ingredients and started to make the dokbokki. After finishing, he put the dokbokki in pots, together with some vegetables and fruits. He cautiously placed them on the coffee table, in order to not forget about it tomorrow morning.
Jaejoong took a long relaxing shower and thought about what he and Junsu would be doing tomorrow. Returning to the kitchen after the shower, he put on the stove the beautifully made kimchi jiggae that he made a few days ago.
The kimchi jiggae was beautifully separated by colors because for Jaejoong, a beautiful sight would make the taste even better. Jaejoong walked to his bedroom slowly, and turning off all the lights. After closing his bedroom’s door and checking if the window was locked.
He slipped inside the blankets, closed his eyes and fell asleep.
