I had a wonderful comment. I really did. It was all psychology and logic.
Then I deleted it.
Here is what I decided on:
They act in a way that they feel they are supposed to respond. They cry because its expected. They glorify and revile it so that they can invariably hold it up at some point and say "My pain, my fear is greater than yours. Look at what I have survived." When in reality they have lost nothing, nor did they (in all probability) have any relationship with the people involved. But they find the one common point, which in this case is the school they attend and tie themselves into it.
Still it turns our sounding callous. But it is what it is I suppose.
