2) As some have probably heard, Michael Nesmith of the Monkees died this week. I liked this quote from a Rolling Stone article (a publication which would have reviled them at the time), because it's so true about canons generally:

2. The mister got us tickets to The Monkees Last Tour in November and Mickey and Michael's performances were terrific. The Monkees songs really hold up. The TV show not so much. Michael's solo records are great. RIP Michael Nesmith.

Glad you enjoyed that -- there were a number of happy posts from people who saw the tour. And yes, Mike had a number of good solo records (or with the First National Band).

I haven't watched the show in many years (although someone posted this clip which is pretty eerie foreshadowing given it accurately presents the order of their deaths: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6V2drYwr23I). However I could imagine that, given it was very of their time, and also directed at kids. TV has gotten so much more sophisticated, even kids' programming. It makes me think of how much more Merlin could have been had the creators just given more of a damn.
