CHARACTER

✧ NAME: Graven
✧ SERIES: Original Character (Final Fantasy X/X-2 Fandom OC)
✧ HISTORY: Graven comes from the world of Spira. He was born in the city of Luca and was the youngest child in the family. His parents were both members of the Crusaders, soldiers charged with defending temples and the Luca stadium from fiends. What Graven wanted to do was follow in his older brother’s steps and become a Fiend Hunter, someone that actively went after the fiends instead of just defending against them. He idolized his brother and often pestered him for lessons in swordfighting. Life for them was as good as it could be for people in Spira living in fear of attacks by Sin. Fears eventually came true when Graven and his family were traveling to the temple at Djose to pray. While traveling around the Mushroom Rock Road with others, Sin attacked and killed most of the group before moving on like the force of destruction it was. Graven and his brother were two of the survivors.

Graven managed to convince his older brother to take him with him and let him be part of his Fiend Hunting group instead of leaving him at a Temple. He ended up traveling over much of Spira and learning from the others. One of his teachers was a Ronso who Graven ended up pretty close to, fascinated by how the Lancent technique worked. While Graven couldn’t use Lancent to learn the ‘Fiends’ Way of Fighting’ like any Ronso could, he could learn Blue Magic the hard way. Graven studied and trained hard, becoming rather skilled at the arts of Blue Magic despite his young age.

The Calm brought by Lord Braska came and Graven and the team enjoyed a time of profit and success. They ended up hired to exterminate fiends from various places around Spira, Graven gaining experience and several new techniques. By the time Sin had returned, Graven’s brother had retired from Fiend Hunting after meeting a woman in Bevelle and marrying her. Graven remained with the group and they settled in at Luca while waiting for a job to come their way. He was present to watch the Blitzball season begin and the ensuing chaos when fiends attacked the stadium. Graven moved to defend fleeing citizens and did so until Seymour Guado summoned Anima and put a stop to the assault by the fiends.

Afterwards, Graven’s team was hired to assist those rebuilding the village of Killika. They kept fighting the fiends that appeared in Sin’s wake, leaving after clearing the forest paths of an infestation of a new species off armored fiends. He stayed skeptical of the news spread about the Summoner Yuna being a traitor because he had a bigger problem. The news had caused a rift within his team. One that let to its disbanding, the members unable to get along with that difference of opinion. Graven decided to continue as a Fiend Hunter but he knew he’d need to be stronger to do it on his own so he began to travel Spira in search of powerful fiends to learn spells from. His travels were mostly uneventful, Graven not making much progress. Eventually he ended up in Bevelle in time to join the rest of Spira in watching Sin’s final defeat and the bringing of the Eternal Calm.

There was celebration and soon business picked back up for Graven. Recruiting a new group of Fiend Hunters, he got a job to help clear out the Calm Lands of the larger fiends so that the area could become a tourist attraction along with several other warriors. This proved to be a very good thing for Graven, especially when they reached the Monster Arena and fought against the powerful beasts lurking there. Graven learned several powerful skills including his most powerful spell, the Supernova.

Even when the rise of New Yevon and the Youth League cut into business and took most of the members of his team, Graven’s life remained a pretty good one. He didn’t get involved in the Sphere Hunting craze himself but he ended up hired as a bodyguard by many aspiring sphere hunters, getting to see more of Spira than ever before and expanding his spell knowledge.

After two years, he decided he had earned a vacation and returned to Luca. It was just in time to buy some tickets to the concert being held by High Summoner Yuna. Graven enjoyed the show and stuck around Luca all through the Sphere Break tournament that happened in the city. He ended up knocked out in the first round of the tournament, not very good at the game at all.

He continued to relax, mostly staying out of the political turmoil caused by the Youth League and New Yevon until the fiends began pouring out of the temples. Leaving his relaxing vacation, Graven rushed towards Djose Temple to assist but was turned away by the Machine Faction there. He wasn’t idle long as a friend recalled him to the Calm Lands after the crisis passed.

He was asked to investigate why there was a large concentration of fiends coming from a seemingly normal area of the Calm Lands and ended up finding Remiem Temple. He also found the fiends there. Once more banding together with other fighters, they cleared the area of monsters. Soon after, Graven attended a the concert held in the Thunder Plains with most of the rest of Spira. Afterwards he started back towards Luca for what he felt was a much needed rest.

✧ TIMELINE: Just as he’s headed back to Luca after the concert on the Thunder Plains.

✧ PERSONALITY: Graven has a bit of a hero complex. He’s the type of guy that just has to rush in and try to save people even if he’s going to get hurt in the process. He hates seeing people in trouble, pain, or fear. It comes from losing his parents at a young age. He doesn’t want anyone else to go through the pain he did so he fights his hardest to try to prevent it. He’ll go after monsters and criminals terrorizing people and will stand up for those that seem oppressed. He’s not the type that will rush in headfirst unless it’s an immediately threatening situation. He’ll try to tackle things the ‘smart way’. While he’ll take down fiends without a second thought, killing others is something he’d rather avoid and wouldn’t do unless there was no other choice.

Graven is also a quiet guy. He doesn’t often raise his voice, only doing so when he feels he’s got something especially important to say. He’s not very open about talking about himself. Graven likes to learn about others and can get uncomfortable talking about himself, not sure he’s interesting enough for anyone to want to learn about. He’s come to like the fact that it makes him a little mysterious so he doesn’t make much effort to get over it. He tends to be a bit of a ham too, enjoying making dramatic/dynamic/heroic entrances and giving lines like “The hero always waits until the last second to show up”.

When it comes time to relax and have a little fun, Graven likes to do things like swim and explore. He likes to play sports and is happy to sit and watch them too. He’s also perfectly content to just find a shady spot and nap. He hates games of chance and will be reluctant to get involved with them. And despite claims otherwise, Graven can be easily persuaded into things by people he considers friends. Loyalty is important to Graven but he’s likely to give second chances after betrayals.

✧ ABILITIES/POWERS:

Skilled Swordsman: He’s no master but Graven is good with a sword. Usually he uses a single-handed fighting style but he can adapt to use both to strengthen his slashes.

Athletic: Graven is a very athletic young man. He regularly exercises and engages in activities like running, jumping, climbing, and swimming.

Survival: Graven knows how to survive on the road, in the jungle, in the forest, on an island, and even in more mountainous areas. He can hunt and trap food, start fires, and build shelters.

Blue Magic: Graven’s most notable ability is the use of Blue Magic. That means he can use the powers of his enemies after surviving an attack from them. He can’t learn every single attack used but there are many he can. It’s dependant on his MP/stamina and the larger and more powerful spells will drain him faster. He knows the following spells already:

-Seed Cannon: A basketball sized seed is fired at high speeds at a target to damage them. The seed tends to break apart on impact and give some shrapnel.
-Aqua Breath: Magically charged water is launched to cause damage over a large area.
-Fire Breath: The same as Aqua Breath but with fire instead of water.
-Bad Breath: A toxic cloud of smoke and sludge is released. While Graven is immune, the cloud is bad enough to kill most plant and animal life on contact alone and leave targets sick and weak long after the battle. Thankfully the cloud disperses easily enough after hitting its target. It’s one of Graven’s more powerful spells and one he rarely uses.
-White Wind: Graven generates a sweet smelling breeze that heals those it touches and helps to purify them and remove the negative effects of other spells.
-Mighty Guard: A strong magic shield is created around Graven and anyone he chooses.
-Absorb: A spell that allows Graven to steal energy from an opponent to heal himself and recharge his own stamina.
-Blaster: A shot of explosive lightning that can temporarily paralyze a target.
-Cry in the Night: A spell that releases a dark wave of energy and a loud, irritating sound to damage multiple targets. Another of his more powerful spells that is not often used.
-Heaven’s Cataract: A spell that not only damages an opponent but can reduce the effectiveness of defenses and make it easier for Graven to attack them afterwards.
-1000 Needles: Graven launches exactly one thousand razor sharp needles at high speed. Each needle itself doesn’t do much damage but there are a thousand of them and they tend to find all those little holes in armor and defenses to get into.
-Storm Cannon: A blast of magic that is at its strongest when Graven is at his strongest. It requires some charge up time but can leave his enemies dazed after impact. Its got splash damage too, able to spread the pain over an area instead of just a fixed point.
-Supernova: Graven’s most powerful spell and often last resort. It’s a massive blast of magical destruction that can level buildings and massive creatures with ease. After casting it, Graven needs time to recover and probably won’t be hurling any other magic around afterwards.

Overdrive: When pushed to his limits. Graven can unleash his Overdrive. A last ditch attack that can help turn the tide of a battle. His Overdrive is called Sapphire Sword and allows him to combine his swordplay with the Aborb spell. For a short time, all of his strikes with the sword will leech energy from his target, healing him. The Overdrive only lasts for about a minute though.

✧ TIME OF ARRIVAL: Night

✧ MASK DESIGN: Standard blue domino mask
✧ PLACE OF SOLACE: His apartment from Luca.

SAMPLES

✧ FIRST PERSON:
[The video clicks on to reveal nothing much at all at first. Just view of the ocean from the beach. The pictures continues for a few moments before someone suddenly drops into view from above. A young man dressed mostly in blue, a hood pulled up over his head casting shadow over most of his face stands up from the crouch he landed in. He regards the camera carefully for a moment before clearing his throat.]

My name is Graven. I’m a fiend hunter. If you have monsters that need exterminating, I’m the man to call. Don’t worry too much about price, I don’t charge a lot. Besides, a little gil is a small price to pay to deal with fiend problems.

[He goes quiet for a moment, looking away. The shift lets a little light in, allowing some stubble to be seen on his face as well as the edges of a domino mask. Eventually he looks back at the camera.]

I’m even willing to make a trade. A map of this strange place or information on how to return to Luca would be much appreciated. The lack of Pyreflies here is a little strange…

[There’s another pause before he steps forward and clicks the feed off.]

✧ THIRD PERSON:

Graven walked slowly down the street, amazed by the scenery. Not even Luca was this active and he wasn’t quite sure how to react to it all. At first he had thought he had died while traveling, that something had gotten the drop on him and stabbed him in the back. He was a bit too confident in his own abilities to think he could have lost a fight he was prepared for. It was the lack of Pyreflies and smacking his knee into a table that convinced him he was still alive. So with his hood down but mask still on, he wasn’t aware of the laws of the land but his mask was part of his ‘working clothes’ anyway.

“Need to find where I am. Perhaps this place has a temple,” Graven muttered to himself as he stepped around some people. Between the strange way everyone was dressed, the odd buildings, and the lack of familiar things like Spheres, the Blue Mage was worried. He’d never admit it but he was. He was just glad that the sun seemed to be going down soon. Graven intended to do a bit more in the way of exploring once night fell. He didn’t really intend to break any laws but he did think that leaping and sneaking around at night would be cooler than just wandering around in the day. He paused when his stomach rumbled, glad no one stopped to give him an odd look.

“Okay…food first. Then worrying about where I am,” he sighed, checking his pocket to make sure he had some gil to spare. “Now just to figure out where I can get something to eat…” he trailed off to no one in particular. It took him about twenty minutes of wandering to realize that his plan to wait to seriously search for information may not have been the best one.

✧ ORIGINAL CHARACTER QUESTION: Graven’s first reaction will be to wonder if he’s died and gone to the Farplane. Once he establishes that he’s still alive, he’ll make some effort to sneak around and learn as much as he can about his surroundings. Adapting completely will be something he’ll probably need help with. The change in money will throw him as will there being guards about. The fact that there’s Royalty will need getting used to as well.
