I'm willing to guess those three people were being pretty dumb in some way or another. I don't think Chompy will eat you - you seem smart and careful enough to stay out of his way. ;o)

All three of the Florida fatalities involved women who were either swimming in or dangling their feet in the water. I'd be perfectly willing to take a broom and run off 'Chompy' when he's under 4 feet long, much bigger than that and I'm giving 'gator control a call. I don't argue with critters that mass more than me with a mouth big enough to swallow my arm whole.
