Jungle Flowers and Diesel fuel

The Navy base at Subic Bay Philippines used to be the biggest base in the Pacific. It's not a base anymore. The Filipinos kicked us out over ten years ago now. I have no idea, and I don't think I want to know the smell of tropical flowers and diesel. Tropical flowers can be sickly sweet and diesel ... hmm!

But I do know that smells can evoke vivid memories. I had a grandfather that was an old sea captain. I barely remember him as he died when I was very young but like many seamen of his time he smoked a pipe.

It would have been 30 years after this I walked into a room once where someone had been smoking a pipe with the same brand of tobacco and I had instant visions of my grandfather. It was spooky how quick and vivid they were.
