My political post. Feel free to skip!

First things first...I didn't vote for him, but I'm not rooting for Obama to fail so that we can have a new president in four years.  I want the opposite of that.  I want to be able to whole-heartedly back him when he runs for re-election.  If Barack Obama fails, that means the country fails.  If anything, I want him to be successful and bring ( Read more... )

But why would we give the money to the states to help them when we could give it to the bankers that started this?

Yeah, I'm no economist, but I really didn't see that first rebate doing much of anything to help the situation. I agree that, even though I could really use it right now, a second rebate would be pretty stupid.

Anyhow, I kind of appreciated the fact that Obama said that we'd all have to work and sacrifice in order to lift our country out of this shit hole. It's not the first time that Americans have been told we needed to sacrifice for our country. When we did it during the two world wars, it was seen as patriotic. When we look back at our grandparents sacrificing in that way, we see it as noble. Now that we're being asked to make some changes, though, we're turning our noses up and saying, "Hey, fuck you. I work hard. Leave me alone."

We're fucking pampered as shit.

There is a difference between sacrificing for country and sacrificing for greed. His call for sacrifice falls into the latter.

Yeah, I don't see it that way.
Our economy is as powerful a factor in our well-being as national security or any other thing that we'd join together to fight for.

Some assholes fucked up our economy. We need to fix it. Some assholes fuck up our land, and we need to fix that.

We can go on and on about where to place blame, but the fact remains that we have a problem and we need to do something about it. We have a history in this country of being able to sacrifice and work and get to where we want to be. That's something that needs to happen now.

here's my plan: give every american a lotto ticket. prizes range from untaxed sums of cash to beheadings, depending on the color of your skin and gender. the lucky ones are thrown into a gladiator style steel cage match free for all. last man (or woman) standing gets to be president.

Mike, why did you keep your plan a secret until after the election?

Also, the states would probably just divy up the money amoungst the political elites and their lobbyists and then when it's time to pay, say, "ooops."

I'm not saying spreading the wealth is going to resolve anything. I'm saying giving the state governments free rein on how they'd spend the money is as risky as expecting the banking system to do the right thing.

Its easier for citizens to hold local government accountable.

Yeah, we can vote the elected officials out, after the fact. By then, too late.
