Day One - A show that should have never been canceled: Firefly

The Vampire Diaries, Thursday nights @ 8 on the CW

Yes, it's a teen drama about a girl in love with a vampire, and that is enough to turn anyone SANE away nowadays with the media constantly bombarding us with Twilight and the young adult fiction section at the bookstore under siege being taken over by vampire fiction. But I will tell you why this is better than Twilight. Being a teen drama you are going to have the same issues addressed in episodes as every other teen drama out there except this show puts a supernatural spin on it, which is part of the reason I love Buffy the Vampire Slayer so much (but please, don't think this is on the same level as Buffy because it's not). The main reason this is better than Twilight is that when Elena, the main character, finds out that Stephan is a vampire she doesn't go "OMG MAKE ME ONE TOO!" no, she freaks out and runs away. WHICH IS THE PROPER REACTION WHEN YOU FIND OUT THE GUY YOU WANT TO DO IT WITH IS A VAMPIRE. Yeah, she edventually gets over it but I appreciated the use of common sense. Elena is a much better role model than Bella because she is a smart girl who doesn't need to be with her vampire boyfriend 24/7 and she proves this to us many times through out the series. This show is based off a book series by the same name written by L. Jane Smith. I read the series back in high school (and yes this series existed BEFORE Twilight, it was first published in 1991) and loved it. It has been so long that I barely remember what happened in the books, and I have yet to read the new one. Part of me is happy that I don't remember though because things are a surprise and seem new to me. I know they have not been sticking strictly to the books either and have changed a lot, which is probably a very good idea. I'm sure when I decide to reread the series I'm going to laugh and parts and wonder why I like there series so much back when I first read it. But all and all I guess I should be grateful to Twilight for being the huge monster it has become because otherwise this show might never have come into existence. I don't think this show is in danger of being canceled or anything, I think it's actually doing pretty well, I just wish more people I knew were watching it. I admit, when I first started watching I didn't think I was going to like it at all. The first episode kinda sucks to be hones, but if you can stick it out past that it gets better with every episode. Give it a chance if you like vampires, I know most of us are feeling very drained of our vampire love lately (excuse my bad pun XD) but I think this show is worth watching. PLUS it has Ian Somerhalder play a HOT "devil may care" vampire, if that isn't reason enough to watch I don't know what is XD
