i spend my friday night at home cleaning and doing laundry and the dishes, then ask my dad if he wants to play chess with me, and even though i took his queen, he STILL beats me! this does not help my self-esteem. bah! i didn't even see it coming. all of a sudden. he didn't even realize it was checkmate! i had to tell him. that's the worst. when

To be fair to Martha, she was beating me handily and hounding my king with her queen, when I managed to get a pawn across the board, turn it into a queen and I thought it was mate in one, but thanks to the opportune presence of a bishop it was game over then and there. So mind the pawns and if you can't be skillful, then being lucky helps. The victorious Dad

You forgot the tried-and-true method of the 'look over there' trick, and then palming whatever piece is most offensive to you, and overturning the board in anger when he calls you out on it.
