Degus! We had a pair of degus several years ago, they're incredible pets. Loved them to death. Watch out for that chewing though, they will chew through ANYthing plastic including their water bottle. We had to get an armored one because they ate the first one we gave them. D:
Oddly enough, we did get them a giant plastic wheel to run in (they'd both run together) and they loved it, never chewed it at all. We also had a giant hamster ball that they'd both go into at the same time, they learned to navigate together to turn corners and stuff. Hilarious little critters!! I miss them. :)
i've got a trio of brothers that the local rescue shelter has been trying to find a home for forever! they're real sweet guys, a little skittish, but they're starting to warm up. :) i hope to let them have adventures like that soon.
We would just put them in the ball and let them wander, you'd be in the other room and just hear "BONK! BONK!" they'd run into the cabinets or a chair or something. And then if the ball made rattling noises you knew it was time to take them out - and clean the poops. XD
We got ours "free to a good home" from the local pet store where we were at that time, and were really glad we did. We gave them a nice tall cage (one that was meant for sugar gliders) and lots of wood to chew on, and they were happy. When they're not in the proper type of housing or given proper care/socialization, they seem like they're out of control, which is why a lot of them end up in rescues. :(
