Let's Start Small

When I was in elementary school I had a pair of pet birds. I kept them in a small cage which I rarely cleaned and which gave them space to fly only a foot in any direction. I was not a dutiful pet-owner. This is not to say that I didn't care about my birds, but I was often too lazy to let my limited amount of concern move me to do things which ( Read more... )

I think from now on I'm going to make sure my fish have a better life than I do because I guess like you I really haven't been a dutiful pet owner. I wouldn't want it to turn out the same way, so new home and luxury and sprinkles of love here we goo.

I have owned many pets since then, none of which I have mistreated. I think you have to make some allowances for people growing up and becoming more responsible. Because I was then, years ago, does not make me a selfish twat now.

You were also in elementary school- I think that's too young to be responsible for birds :P They've always seemed like the kind of pet that takes alot of time to take care of.

I had a hamster a few years ago. I didn't take the best care of him either. I fed him and cleaned his cage reguarly, but I didn't play with him nearly as much as I should have :[

When I was seven I had another bird that I took better care of the bird that I had than that. My bird was like my Siamese twin.

I love animals unlike you. At this moment in my life I was holding down a full time job and going to school. It was hard for me to ever be home and feed my bird. There would be days where he had no water and no food and I wouldn't be able to help him. Since I lived with my parents and my older brother I thought they would take on that responsibility but they never did. I found him the next day in his cage on the floor laying stiff dead. It was then a whole bunch of guilt rushed through my body. I was angry! The pet wasn't only mine it was my brothers too. He had no job at the time what was his excuse for not taking care of this bird we have had for 5 years? It sucks when you are responsible for the cause of an animals death. I feel your pain ::hugs::
