Name: Misaka Mikoto
Series: Toaru Majutsu no Index
Timeline: Post Sisters Arc
Canon Resource Links: Series overview. Character overview.

Affiliation: Trainer

Personality:

Mikoto is one of those girls who has a huuuuge reputation, but doesn't turn out to be who you expect. She's one of the seven Level 5s of Academy City, she goes to a middle school called Tokiwadai middle school where rich and proper girls gather and they're are all high and mighty. And Mikoto is known as Tokiwadai's Ace-- "The Railgun." With all of this under her belt, you expect her to be a really unapproachable person who looks down on Level zeros, but that's not quite right. Mikoto is actually pretty friendly when you get to know her and she's very approachable to hang out with when it comes down to it. Saten and Uiharu were expecting her to have a dignified appearance when they first met her, but Mikoto greeted them warmly and even offed to go shopping and eating cripes with them. If there's one thing about Mikoto that stays true, it's her loyalty to her friends. And she claims that as she was once a Level One through very hard work and effort, she had managed to have become a Level Five. She even states that anyone can become a Level Five if they work hard enough to reach their goals. But after the Level Upper/AIM field incident, Mikoto realizes that not everyone has the motivation to become a Level Five through sheer hard work and effort alone. While Mikoto stays idealistic, she still has a good grasp of the distance between Level Zeros and those above.

Now this doesn't mean that Mikoto is an all around friendly person! In fact, she can become violent quickly if someone says something to anger her. An example would be when Touma was saving her from a group of gangsters and he calls her a kid. That was enough to set Mikoto off and caused her to electricute all of the gang members except for Touma himself (due to his special ability). And she gives her best friend, Kuroko Shirai electrocutions daily because of Kuroko's perverted obsessions for her. Mikoto likes to have her personal space as much as any normal person would. Now going deeper into her personality, Mikoto often shows off her tough exterior when she's angered or in the heat of battle or in general, but she also has a very childish and feminine side that she's embarrassed to show others. One example would be when her, Uiharu and Saten were shopping for clothes. Mikoto saw some very cute, yet childish pajamas that she wanted to try on. Before she could remark on how nice it looked, the two girls claimed that it was "too childish for middle schools like themselves to wear" and Mikoto reluctantly agreed with them. When the two girls left to explore more of the store, Mikoto separated herself from the group to try on the pajamas. This is also shown (and played for laughs) with Mikoto's fangirling over a certain frog toy called Gekota. She has keychains, she has pajamas, she even has a cellphone of it. Kuroko often scolds her like a mother would for keeping an attachment to cute things like that.

While Mikoto holds a strong sense of right and wrong, she can take her sense of justice to disturbingly high levels especially for a girl her age. This is shown and expanded upon during the Sisters arc. Mikoto ends up meeting one of her clones from an experiment that she was tricked to do when she was younger. After having a day of bonding, Mikoto and the clone form a sister-sister relationship. Later on, the clone is killed by a Level Six esper called the Accelerator. Mikoto tries to battle it out with Accelerator, but the levels between them were too wipe of a gap. She learns that the Misaka clones were created to be killed by Accelerator three thousand times. This was in order to make Accelerator become a Level Seven esper. Out of her own compassion and kindness for the clones, Mikoto decides to singlehandely destroy all 23 of the experiment bases that were creating the Misaka clones. During all of this, Mikoto doesn't even tell her friends about the incident because she blames herself for creating the clones and refused to let anyone else get involved. Because of the fact that the clones shared her DNA, Mikoto thought it was her fault for having the clones get born into the world to die for a pointless experiment. At this point, Mikoto goes from idealist, to realist, to down right cynical. After learning that she would have to go against the corrupted government of Academy City and by an extension, Academy City itself, Mikoto reaches the end of her rope. Completely burnt out physically and emotionally stressed, she decides to fight Accelerator knowing full well that she would die in the process.

But Kamijou Touma appears to stop Mikoto's suicidal course. Now to Mikoto, Touma is her rival. The reasoning behind this is because he is the only one who can stop her electricity attacks and come out completely unharmed. This is due to his special ability called the "Imagine Breaker" where he can nullify all supernatural phenomena that comes in contact with his right hand. When Mikoto is around Touma, she starts acting more irrational than usual. She even chases him around for an entire night just for a fight. It's very apparent that Mikoto has hidden (but obvious) feelings for Touma and these feelings are strengthened later on in the series. Moving on, Touma tells her that her justice was in the right place, but her methods were all wrong. Mikoto gets angry and ends up defeating Touma (who doesn't put up a fight) and realizes her mistakes. Thanks to Touma, Mikoto gets herself back on the right track. Together with the help of the Misaka clones, they defeat Accelerator and halt the experiment once and for all. And with that, everything goes relevantly back to normal in Academy City.

Samples

First Person Sample: A Pichu? Now even though it's r-really adorable, I wasn't expecting to end up with something so small. And here I was expecting to get one of the older starters like Charmander, Squirtle or Bulbasaur! But I ended up getting a Pichu? It's almost like how the anime started off with Satoshi went on his first adventure... It looks like I'm going to follow in his footsteps too! Ah... N-Not that I still watch that show... Whenever I'm surfing through channels it conveniently comes on, that's all... Anyway, there's a saying out there that says "Big things come in small packages", so I hope this Pichu won't disappoint me!

Oh yeah, um... If there's anyone from Academy City on the network, please reply back to me as soon as you can! I think it would be more convenient for us to travel together than to be seperated from an obnoxiously long distance. Thanks a lot!

Third Person Sample:
The first thing that Mikoto realized when she woke up was the fact that her Electromaster ability was completely gone. She couldn't form sparks from between her fingers, she couldn't shoot off lightning bolts from her hands or create sparks with her feet and this also meant that she wouldn't be able to use shoot coins like high speed bullets anymore. This meant Misaka Mikoto was now a normal person. She wasn't a Level 5 anymore. It meant that she was down to Level 0. No abilities.

It wouldn't be a stretch to say that Mikoto was a little bummed out about not having any powers. She came from Level 1 to Level 5 through sheer hard work and effort that no one could possibly imagine and now all of that work had suddenly disappeared without a trace. But that didn't mean that she was useless. Saten was a Level 0 herself and she had helped out her group on numerous occusions. So by that level of reasoning... Not having any powers wouldn't be too bad for her here.

As these thoughts echoed throughout Mikoto's head, her Pichu came running beside her leg and perked up at her happily. "Chu!"

Mikoto always had a strong weakness for cute things. She couldn't help but blush a little from the Pichu's happy face. Then she bent down to the Pichu's eye level. "I wonder... Since you're obviously an electric type, can you show me your Thundershock?"

The Pichu nodded in reply and fired off a thundershock attack into the air... But the attack didn't last for along. The baby Pokemon ended up passing out from the amount of electrcity it was releasing. When it came to controlling electric shocks, Pichu had a long way to go. As the electric mouse fell on its back, Mikoto picked it up in her arms as the Pichu sighed from its failure.

"Hehe... I used to have trouble firing electrcity myself." She gave it a friendly smile. "But don't worry! I'll make sure that you overcome that boundary and become a very powerful Pokemon!" The Pichu smiled up at her and nodded in confirmation. Mikoto had a feeling that was going to become a really beautiful friendship if she could pull of Pokemon training right.
