*****
Patting Sooyoung's back once he hears her cough for the nthn time, Jaejoong let out a soft sigh as he slipped off his jacket and wrapped it around her. "You okay?"

Despite the lack of life and glow Sooyoung’s face used to have, she shot him a smile in gratitude. Jaejoong and Sooyoung are close, but the couple had never had been this close (very close that they are always at least a meter away from each other at maximum) ever since the two discovered about Sooyoung’s condition two years ago. She was diagnosed with leukaemia and it was unexpected for the two as well as for Sooyoung’s family. However, there’s a side of Sooyoung that is thankful for this illness. Why? Because she got to see a much better side of her boyfriend that she didn’t know that existed. Jaejoong used to be the typical sweet, mushy yet rebel type but when the news of her condition was brought, he revealed a more soft, sensitive and caring side of Kim Jaejoong.

She laughed at him and pinched his cheeks, "Oppa, there was only something stuck in my throat. No big deal."

Jaejoong pouted before his eyes soon landed on a figure that just walked out from a room. Doctor Han politely greeted the two and asked for Sooyoung to come with him for a check up.

"Choi Sooyoung?"

It's that time again when the two would visit the doctor for a check up and see how Sooyoung's condition is going. She’s been taking chemotherapy for quite some time now which explains why Sooyoung’s hair is wrapped with a scarf to cover her hair loss. But then for the past week, she has been really active and healthy to say the least.

"Good Afternoon Doctor Han!" the couple greeted him.

Jaejoong assisted Sooyoung up and went with her to where Doctor Han was standing. "I'll take it from here." Once he saw Sooyoung and Doctor Han fully enter the room, Jaejoong went back to his seat and waited.

*

After the usual routine of blood tests like every single time Sooyoung would enter this specific room with, all the practical checkups were done. Doctor Han asked Sooyoung to sit patiently in front of his desk while he studies the results.

"Sooyoung-shi, how long have you and your boyfriend been together?"

Despite the bizarre question asked, Sooyoung answered. "Three years. Is there a problem?"

Sooyoung noticed Doctor Han open his mouth but closed it after; he swallowed a huge lump that formed in his throat before facing her completely. He let out a deep sigh and glanced at Sooyoung who was patiently waiting for him to continue.

"Sooyoung-shi-"

*

Jaejoong patiently flipped another page of the magazine while humming to a song- Sooyoung's favorite lullaby. Little did he realize, his soothing voice was actually echoing in the hospital's corridor and a middle-aged woman suddenly shushed the now black haired man. Jaejoong looked up from his magazine to only notice the people staring at him. He shot them an apologetic smile, "Mianhae."

Soon after, a familiar silhouette caught his attention with a somewhat blank face. He neared Sooyoung as she exited Doctor Han's room, "How did it go?"

"He wants to talk to you."

Without any questions asked, Jaejoong did as to what Sooyoung said and entered the doctor's room. "You wanted to talk to me?"

"Please sit."

Jaejoong sat at the seat where Sooyoung did and watched Doctor Han gather papers on his grasp. Once his fidgeting was done, Doctor Han faced Jaejoong who is now beyond more curious.

"Jaejoong-shi, Sooyoung's condition has gotten worse."

He stayed silent, his heart had just literally sank. Doctor Han noticed Jaejoong froze by his words, he really couldn't blame the young man anyway. Jaejoong felt his eyes fogging with tears but held it back, letting out a shaky sigh and allow himself take in the stabbing words he’s expecting to hear.

"She's expected within a month."

"A month?", Jaejoong finally spoke rather soft and hopeless. Frustration rose on him and all those tears he was holding slowly cascaded down his now red tinted cheeks.

"Doctor Han there must be some way!" he bent down to the doctor’s knee level and grabbed the edge of the seat. “Please! She can’t just end the battle this soon!”

"We tried everything Jaejoong", Doctor Han tried to calm the sobbing man. "I'm very sorry."

"Sorry doesn't change anything!" he shook off his hand away. "I can't just loose her!"

"Jaejoong, I expect you to be strong. Be strong for Sooyoung, that's the best you could do for her last month of living."

After a fair of 5 minutes, Jaejoong exited the room and no words were said between the two as he rushed towards Sooyoung. He hugged her tight and tears rolled uncontrollably down to both of their faces.

"O-oppa, I’m going to die."

"Don't say that", Jaejoong hushed her with a kiss. He wiped her tears with his thumb, massaging just the bottom of her eye. “You’re not going to die.”

“But I w-will”, Sooyoung’s voice was shaky and you can barely hear her speak since she was choking from her own tears. “I’m going to miss you.”

“Soo...” Jaejoong hugged her tight and kissed her forehead. Sooyoung clenched onto Jaejoong’s shirt just by his torso and let all the tears shed drip on it. He cradled her back and forth, humming to Sooyoung’s lullaby. “I-I’ll miss you too.”

Three weeks passed. Jaejoong and Sooyoung made sure to not spare a second. They went to places where they’ve always wanted to visit, do things Sooyoung always have wanted to do and most especially, to spend every minute with each other. But behind all those moments, Sooyoung is scared. Not because she will die, but she’s scared to leave Jaejoong. She needs him to be happy, to feel love even after she is gone. Then an idea popped in her, though hesitant and unsure about it, it was all for Jaejoong and for his happiness.

Sooyoung quietly jumped from the back of Jaejoong once she caught a glimpse of him sitting on the bench that stood just by the park facing the sunset. “Boo!”

Jaejoong turned around to face her but a pair of lips colliding with his was his greeting and not making it last short, he kissed her back. “Hello to you too, Choi Sooyoung.”

“Oppa, it’s been three weeks already” Sooyoung suddenly turned serious by her tone as she sat beside him. “I’ve only got a week left.” If Jaejoong was uncomfortable over Sooyoung’s words then he definitely didn’t show it. “Soo, not now please.”

“Why?” Sooyoung scooted so she can face him. “I will die sooner or later and- I-I’ve got something to tell you and you may disagree but please here me out.” He didn’t bother to ask her once he saw a stream of tears cascade down her now red tinted cheeks.

“I c-called Tiffany.”

“What?”

Sooyoung finally got the urge to look at him, “I...I called Tiffany. You need her by your side.”

“What the hell?! No, I don’t!” Jaejoong grasped her shoulders. “I don’t need her! I have you right here!”

“But you’re going to lose me soon! I’ll die in a week or maybe even tomorrow or in the later hour! You need someone to comfort you after I leave oppa, I don’t want to see you suffer.” She paused.

“I’d rather suffer than get back with Tiffany.” Jaejoong hissed. “Soo, why are you doing this?”

“Because all I want for you is happiness in life. I want you to feel loved and I know Tiffany will be the perfect one for you.”

“Aren’t I happy with you? And even after you leave me, I know I will still be loved because our love will never die.” Jaejoong practically choked up by his words when he mentioned ‘leave’.

“No one would ever replace you Soo. Yes, Tiffany may be my first love but hell, I don’t need her by my side just so I can be happy and feel loved. We may be going to be separated physically, but you’ll forever be a part of me Soo. I know you’ll be watching me from up there and just by that will make me happy.”

Sooyoung stared at him in amazement. She sure fell in love with the right person, the person who stood beside her from her non-ending suffering battle and the person who she got to spend her last moments with. “Oppa, promise me that you’ll remain happy and strong.”

“I promise” Jaejoong’s voice was soft and sincere. He caressed Sooyoung’s face before pulling her for a long warm embrace. “I love you.”

“I love you too.” She leaned on his touch and with no consent, she collided her lips once again with his. “I’m sorry that I won’t be able to be with you any longer. I ruined our plans to have five beautiful kids and live together until we’re old and grumpy.”

“I’ll grow as an old moody man with a gray moustache for you.” Jaejoong joked and earned a carefree laugh from Sooyoung. He will for sure miss hearing that half-giggle half-laugh from her, he will miss seeing that beautiful face of hers every day, the feel of her lips touch his, her arms wrapped around his and her fingers laced around with his long fingers. He will miss her very much. There is no doubt that Jaejoong is breaking inside but he doesn’t want to show his weakness in front of Sooyoung. He doesn’t want to go sober and shed the tears he’s been holding because he has to be strong for her. Just for Sooyoung.

A small smile planted on Sooyoung’s face as she settled her head on Jaejoong’s shoulder, intertwined their fingers and slowly closed her eyes. Jaejoong hummed silently to her lullaby, as his free hand stroked her arm, squeezing it from time to time.

“Oppa, let me rest for a while, just for a minute.”

A minute has passed, an hour, a day and her eyes never opened.
