Yeah, that's kind of insane. Well, no. It's not supposed to be an honest evaluation; it's a pro wrestling kind of move to drum up excitement and faux-intimidate his enemies. Only difference is tearing off your shirt and pointing at the camera is considered bad form for CEOs.
It's a little too late for him to say otherwise: "Yeah, we coulda done better than trading away just over half of the company for WoW; I've just got poor judgement!"
to get the same bang for the 100 mil buck that WoW got you'd have to have the market leader (everquest then, WoW now) sit on its ass for years and churn out crap. considering that WoW is NOT sitting on its hands then yeah, I think its going to take more than $100 mil.... not even factoring in that the next mega mmo will have to have assets that are higher quality which will of course cost more.....
I agree that it will probably cost more than WoW to compete with WoW, but I don't think it will be 10x more. There's also the fact you can do things better than WoW, at least from a cost standpoint, by learning from their mistakes.
thats all assuming that WoW is a static target. I figure that a lot of the income of WoW is going to WoW 2.0, which would be the real competition for this fictious title to compete against, and NOT the WoW that people are playing today
