After ten years, I've finally figured out how Xander got to the Ytreva. Not quite in the inspired mood to write about it yet, but at least it's a giant stumbling block finally laid to rest. Maybe drawing a bunch of pictures of the crew will help

There have been some successful stories done just like you describe -- where several characters have their own stories, and they all happen to meet for a certain set of events. In movies: Magnolia, Reservoir Dogs. In video games: Street Fighter. Books: I just read one called "The Confusion", by Neal Stephenson.
