Feeling Sick

So, this morning, I was looking at a friend's Facebook page. She'd posted about religious tolerance, and I wanted to see what she'd been up to lately, so I started scrolling down her page. In the process, I came across
an article about Gosnell, an article about SEXTing, some comments about Steubenville, a PSA I'd have shared if it hadn't asked Read more... )

Amen. And, maybe I'm just odd, but I didn't read your "rape victim" hypothetical situation as if it was a female victim. Men, women, children, the elderly, anyone... all can be victims, no matter what our societal norms tell us to assume.

Yay! I'm so glad you didn't make that assumption! And, yes, it is odd (in a good way!). I did a presentation on rape jokes for the ethics bowl, and had a number of people tell me that rape is a female problem. I had to explicitly look up rape statistics on men to refute them, and even then I got some doubters.

I think the nearest thing to a beauty pagent for men would be a body building contest like Mr. Universe.

I have read about some rich celebrity women who've had to pay alimony to their ex husbands. I think Woopie Goldberg had to.

I'm on your side though. I do think women and men are stereotyped by the media especially.

Thank you! I'm sorry I didn't respond sooner: I don't know how I missed this, but I apparently did.

Mr. Universe is more about how strong someone looks, rather than how attractive, isn't it? That seems to be more about the "male" characteristic of strength, right? Or do I not understand those contests? I've never been interested in them, although I do know that there are competitions for female bodybuilders (and that female bodybuilders are, apparently, seen by the population-at-large as creepy/weird/gross).

I'm glad some rich women have paid alimony. Hopefully, that will change more. Not that I think everyone should pay alimony, mind you: in most divorces, I don't think it should be a factor at all. But I do think that the situation should be based on the relationship & the status of the people in it, not on their genders. I'd really like to see more guys winning primary custody, too. Right now, it seems heavily skewed towards the women, but there are plenty of terrible mothers and good fathers.
