the "cat of nine tails" was a whip used on naval and pirate ships for disciplinary uses. it was kept in a bag, thus when the cat was out of the bag, someone was in trouble because someone in charge had found out of some trespass deserving of lashes.

there's nothing funny about a flogging, whereas the sentence:

Back in the day - your greatgrandmother's day, Uncle Andreas and Uncle Gabriel used to "neuter" the tomcats by putting them in a bag or a boot - head first of course. I can see why one wouldn't want to let the cat out of the bag during this procedure.
