Chapter 3 is Herod's perspective on the visit of the wise men to Jerusalem and its aftermath. Why did he order the slaughter of those babies?
"I did what I had to do to maintain order, to secure power, so that order can be maintained."
Collateral damage is what we call it these days. The target was the child of Mary and Joseph, but others in the vicinity were killed too. We are horrified by the story of the Holy Innocents, but are we horrified that our governments are using the same justification for drone strikes and bombings in Iraq? But what can we do? A million marching against the idea of war in Afghanistan in 2002 was ignored? We justify Trident as a deterrent and are preparing to spend billions on its replacement but we can't afford the NHS?
Lord have mercy
