RIGHT.  Question for y'all out there (and answer anonymously if you want, that's fine, or list your name with pride.)

Have any of y'all had experiences, good or bad, with the Atkins Diet?  'Cause I'm looking at it right now.  I need to get in better shape, in better health; I'm tired of being heavier than I ought to be, and I'm not so overweight ( Read more... )

I'm a big fan of the Paleo 'diet'. I have to echo that it needs to be an enjoyable eating lifestyle that is implemented gradually or it will never, ever work. (And it has worked for me for ~20 pounds in the last year.) Bottom line: protein with every meal, lots of veggies for fiber and vitamins. Water, coffee, tea (no sugar/milk). I still eat legumes, but that is because they work for me.

An excellent health blog written by a women's studies professor with a sharp wit and experience with starting from scratch. Check out the eating articles:Reply

Atkins is dangerous, because it works by creating an undiagnosed diabetic condition within your body. You should find something else that works for you! Doctor Atkins himself died of his diet!

I've been reading a ton of health books myself trying to see if anything perks my interest. Atkins kinda threw me off because I'd heard a pretty bad rep (mostly like a lot of others were saying in that a: can cause problems b: the weights near impossible to keep off c: if you have probs with cholesterol it's problematic ( ... )

John and I did Atkins for a couple of years and I'm not a fan at all. One of the big problems we had was boredom since you are really limited with what you can and can't eat and most of the foods I like were on the no list. The other thing with Atkins is that it is not a diet it is a lifestyle. If you don't stay on it for the rest of your life the weight comes back - quickly.

It is very high in protein and fats which are not great for the heart. I've found that since I've gone off I have problems with foods I never did before. Acidic things for example bother me in a big way.
