Poem: "Infinitesimal Angels"

Sep 13, 2010 19:02

This poem came out of the September 7-8 Poetry Fishbowl.  It was inspired by an art prompt from haikujaguar and funded out of general donations.  You may note that several of my poems this month touched on angels, deities, and other numinous beings.  I believe that science and religion are complimentary rather than oppositional paradigms. See a scrapbooked version of the poem.

EDIT 9/21/10: A full-color version of "Gene Angel" is now online.

Infinitesimal Angels

We are kept safe
not merely from sin
but also from the
inexorable slide
of random mutation
by infinitesimal angels
winging their
slow way through
the spirals of
our DNA as they
make whole
what was broken.
Not only the devil
but also the angel
is in the details,
for the eye of God
can see things
far smaller
than any sparrow
and dispatch
spirits to
oversee them.
