Poem: "How Chaos Came to the Cosmos"

Nov 03, 2010 20:23

This poem came out of the November 2, 2010 Poetry Fishbowl.  It was inspired by prompts from haikujaguar and aldersprig, plus the lyrics for "The 12 Days of Christmas."  It was sponsored by janetmiles.  In case you don't recognize them all, the animals cited in the poem are considered tricksters in various cultures or have similar personalities in general. See two different scrapbooked versions of this poem.

How Chaos Came to the Cosmos

When the gods made the multiverse,
all was orderly and it was good.
Each universe had its own space,
attached neatly at the threshold to the passageway between
where the gods walked in stately grace.

And then Trickster snuck into the Hall of Doors and released
12 ferrets bouncing
11 swordfish fencing
10 cats a-pouncing
9 foxes slinking
8 dogs a-hunting
7 hares a-boxing
6 snakes a-sneaking
5 golden bears
4 cawing crows
3 blue jays
2 prairie wolves
and a kea in a kauri tree.

It was not necessarily good,
but it was the First Joke,
and it sure was funny.
