This poem was inspired by prompts from thesilentpoet and ellenmillion.  It has been sponsored by thesilentpoet and itew.  You can read about Saturn's moon Titan and its hidden ocean, along with the Titans, online.

Titanic Adventures

Titan shifts restlessly in his sleep
as he makes his slow way around Saturn.
Under the icy crust lies a layer of liquid water,
melted by the moon's hot core
and the crushing hand of gravity.

His breath is a cloud of hydrocarbons and nitrogen,
the only moon with a true atmosphere,
whispering endlessly
through the black silence of space.

In times of old, the titans
were gods and giants,
great elemental spirits
embodying the forces of creation
and destruction.
Not lightly do they share their name,
fitful entities ever ready
to lift their fists against an arrogant ship
and swat the clever monkeys into the sea
for making waves.
A moon, though, is fitting tribute
to their majesty:
they let it bide,
for they will make different waves there.

Life and power will find a way
to combine.  The legacy
of Oceanus and Tethys runs deep.
Somewhere hidden in the mist,
clad in armor of ice,
lie their mysteries.

Here is a heavenly body
whose enigmatic dance
draws the eye
of scientists and poets alike.
Who knows what it might hold?

All I know is this:
whatever is waiting for us there,

it's huge.
