Poem: "Gods in Review"

Aug 08, 2012 20:57

This came out of the August 7, 2012 Poetry Fishbowl.  It was inspired by a prompt from meeksp and sponsored by janetmiles.  No gods, evangelists, or comic books were harmed in the making of this poem.

Gods in Review

Herne ducked his antlers under the door
and announced, "I'm huge in Canada.
Some mortal writer keeps featuring me
in urban fantasy novels,
and it's really catching on.
How is everyone else doing?"

Groans sounded around the room.
"Did you not like Clash of the Titans, brother?"
Herne said to Zeus.

"I preferred the earlier one
with the little moving statues,"
Zeus grumbled.  "How can they
make so many better tools,
but put on much worse plays?"

"At least yours has a plot,"
Thor pointed out.
"The skalds would be ashamed
to recite some of what the mortals
write about me these days."

"Why is Jesus crying?"
Herne wondered.

"Somebody knocked on the door
and handed us one of his comic books,"
Thor explained.  "It's even worse than mine."

"I told you not to read the reviews,"
Seshat said as she shooed them back toward the bus.
"Just deliver the message and get out!"
