Poem: "The Memelord"

Dec 04, 2013 21:31

This poem came out of the December 3, 2013 Poetry Fishbowl.  It was inspired by prompts from aldersprig and my_partner_doug.  It has been sponsored by janetmiles.

The Memelord

No one knows
why things go viral
on the Internet.

It just happens sometimes,
one meme spreading far and wide
while many similar ones
languish unnoticed.

The Memelord
is the ultimate lurker,
the god of what catches on
silently deciding the fate of cyberspace.

No one knows
where he came from
or how he emerged from
the primal chaos

but there is one thing
we do know about the Memelord:

He is inordinately fond of cats.

Notes:

A meme is a transmittable idea, and an Internet meme spreads through cyberspace.  Know your memes.

There's a widespread observation that "God is inordinately fond of beetles."  Given the rise of LOLcats, we may deduce that the deity of memes prefers kitties to bugs.
