Poem: "Pumpkin Spice Prosperity"

Dec 16, 2020 22:13

This was the linkback perk poem for the December 1, 2020 Poetry Fishbowl.  It was originally hosted by Dreamwidth user Dialecticdreamer.  It came out of the November 2020 Creative Jam, prompted by DW user Alexseanchai.  It also fills the "taste" square in my 11-1-20 card for the Sense-Ation Bingo fest.  This poem belongs to the Polychrome Heroics series.

"Pumpkin Spice Prosperity"

[Monday, November 23, 2015]

Karen Capellini knows
exactly what she is doing.

She has a bachelor's degree and
a master's degree in Business, plus
minors in African-American studies
and Gender and Sexuality Studies.

She knows why the pipeline leaks.

Karen has two college degrees
and a decent job at WorldWorks,
a multinational corporation, and
people still ask her to make coffee.

Unlike most of her fellow feminists,
Karen doesn't argue about that;
she makes coffee on request.

It's just not all the same coffee,
and that's what makes the difference.

When the men demand it, barking at her
like she's a barista, Karen brings them
decaf with a pinch of black salt
to mess up their money luck.

Gender and Performance
SCA-UA 455 4 points.
How do performances of gender-in everyday life and in such representational forms as theatre, film, literature, and law-produce and enforce meanings and experiences of gender? How are gender norms connected to other rules for being a subject, such as class, race, religion, sexuality, and bodily capacity? If we must become a gender to be a subject at all, can we also un-become gender and change the terms of social belonging and recognition?

Religion, Sexuality, and American Public Life
SCA-UA 812 Identical to RELST-UA 646. 4 points.
What are the “proper” role and place of religious beliefs and expressions in American public life? What are the “proper” role and place of sex in American public life? And how are these two questions related to each other? Examines the apparent contradiction between principles of church-state separation and religious freedom on the one hand, and the invocation of religious ideas to justify state regulation of bodily life, especially sexual life, on the other.

Race and Reproduction
SCA-UA 158 4 points.

Women and Slavery in the Americas
SCA-UA 730 Identical to HIST-UA 660. 4 points.
