Looking at it from the ground, it seemed very high. Even for a man who’d climbed some frankly ridiculously high things - a man who could leap higher than should be entirely possible - it seemed high. High, and very dangerous. Vincent folded his arms and glowered at Yuffie from within his coat.

“Yuffie, get down from there,” he said.

Predictably, Yuffie did not do as she was told. Swinging her legs around from the other side, she peeked over the ridge of the sleeping Adamantoise’s shell and grinned at Vincent.

“Oh, don’t be such a wet blanket, Vince!” she called, waving. “Come on up! The view’s great!”

Vincent sighed inwardly, lifting one hand up to scratch at his cheek. Only Yuffie would see a sleeping Adamantoise and consider climbing on it. She had scrambled up the massive reptile without a second thought, the same old impish expression of glee on her face that she got whenever she was up to some sort of mischief.

Vincent stepped forward, looking at her looking down at him. I can wait all day, Vince! that expression said. Get up here!

“If it wakes up while you’re riding it, Yuffie, I doubt it will be pleased,” Vincent said.

Yuffie waved a hand dismissively, plopping into a sitting position on the monster’s shell and giving it a friendly pat. Vincent noticed, not for the first time, that she still hadn’t zipped up her shorts all the way. Gaia only knew how those things managed to stay on. It would be so easy to jump up there, a monster’s agility propelling him, and pull th…no. This was not the time for those thoughts. Vincent cleared his throat and glanced away.

“C’mooooon Vincent, it’s an Adamantoise. We’ve taken down loads of these things before!”

And suffered the scars for it, Vincent added, grimacing. Enemy skills were useful, but intentionally putting yourself in danger to get them seemed recklessness of the highest order. Of course, this was not about that; it was about having fun, the word that seemed to become Yuffie's favourite whenever he was around. It was always about having fun with Yuffie, getting him ‘lighten up’ and ‘come out of his shell’

...unless it was about materia, of course. It was about materia sometimes, too.

Vincent remained motionless, holding Yuffie’s gaze. Neither person moved for a moment before Yuffie, huffing an indignant sigh, turned around and faced the other way on the monster’s shell, folding her arms, glaring out at the sea.

“Fine, be that way. Ya big jerk,” she muttered. “I’m just tryin’ to get you to have a little bit of fun.”

A strange tensing in his stomach and Vincent winced. An old injury? No…curative magic and his own monstrous qualities took care of them. There were no monsters in the vicinity. He didn’t have reason to be feeling pain…unless…

Guilt. Of course. If anyone could instil him with guilt, above and beyond what he already had on his shoulders, it was her; and over the most ridiculous things, too. Looking up at her back again, he wondered how someone so young was already so skilled in the art of getting what they wanted. No doubt her father had a large hand in that.

Silence passed and neither of them moved; Vincent in silent contemplation, Yuffie looking out at the sea from her precarious vantage point and waiting for Vincent to join her. Vincent gave a quiet sigh - she could wait all day, to prove her point. To get me to have some fun. - and took a step backwards.

A push on the ground and he was sailing through the air, cape flowing out behind him. He landed next to Yuffie with a clank, causing the ninja to start.

“Geez, Vince, don’t do that! You’ll give me a heart attack!” she said, pressing one hand against her chest.

“…I am here, Yuffie.” Vincent replied. “Are you happy now?”

Yuffie’s lips quirked and she bounced to her feet, patting him on the shoulder, Vincent flinching at the touch. Not unwelcome, just unexpected.

“Oh, totally,” she smiled. “See, that wasn’t so hard now, was it?”

Vincent nodded grudgingly and glanced at the ocean. It did look better from this vantage point, he had to admit. Perhaps Yuffie had a point.

Yuffie blinked and followed his gaze, grinning as she saw he was looking at the ocean.

“Told ya. Now just sit down, and we can…”

A furious roar interrupted her, and Vincent shifted his feet as he felt the world shift underneath her. Wonderful; the monster had awoken. He reached out for balance, blindly groping, and felt his hand connect with another. Blinking in surprise, he turned his head; Yuffie was trying to keep balance as the monster bucked too, and she had grabbed onto his hand for support. Their eyes locked for a moment, and Vincent noted that Yuffie’s cheeks had turned slightly red.

Another buck of the monster later, and Yuffie toppled into him, and Vincent noticed that his cheeks had reddened, too. The monster settled for a moment; Vincent silently thanked the beast for allowing him a moment to regain his composure. He looked down at the young girl, half in his arms.

“We need to leave,” he said.

“Yeah,” she said.

Another push, and they were sailing through the air, monster’s reflexes and ninja’s training sending them to a safe landing. Vincent glanced backwards to see the Adamantoise, still very displeased, lumbering after them.

Their eyes met again for the briefest of seconds, and the pair took off running, the ground shaking behind them as the monster gave chase.

A little bit of fun, indeed.

END

I can totally explain this. I was in PWdressingroom chat at the time and asked for random words to base the fic on. The only one not related to penises in some way was 'turtle'.
So, you get this. Hooray? :D
