Who: Mahaado, any others who wish to stop by
Where: Purple Papyrus Book Store, down the street from the Domino City Museum, four blocks over from the Black Clown Game store
When: April 10th
Why: Because the book store is now open! ^^
Mahaado set the sign in the window to open, and just beside it he posted the help wanted notice as well before he turned back to his little shop. He adjusted his glasses and gazed at his domain, flicking a few errant strands of his long violet hair back over his shoulder where they were constantly escaping.
The Purple Papyrus had been open only a week under his care. He had purchased it from an older man whose health had forced him to retire. The back rooms were stacked with old books that came with the shop, treasures Mahaado would not part with until he went through each and every one himself. The man had seen his love for books and trusted him with the dusty collection.
The front part of the store was in two levels. The lower level near the door had the cashier counter on one side and a small coffee bar on the other (still closed for lack of staff to run it for him) and in between them were the modern displays and racks for magazines and manga, mystery books, romance books, science fiction and fantasy and all the newest best sellers that people would read for entertainment. The back half of the store, the upper level that was exactly four steps higher than the front was the area lined with older wooden shelves and hard covered books. Antique volumes that serious collectors would envy. In amongst these leather bound and gold leafed volumes were cozy groups of couches and chairs where customers could gather to talk quietly about the latest releases and older favorites.
A loud demanding cry made the quiet man stop ad look down. The glossy arch of his little cats back was rubbing against his ankles. He lowered a hand to pet her midnight fur and she regarded him with wise yellow eyes.
"Now Zalika, we've only just opened. I'm sure someone will be along to pet you shortly, you must be patient, that's all."
He told her with a smile. Everyone who came through the door stopped to give the friendly little kitten a pat on the head. No bookstore should be without a cat, and luckily he had brought his own. He'd found her in an alleyway, just a lost little stray the very night he first moved to Domino. He couldn't leave her out there in a strange city all alone.
He hadn't even been sure he would stay at that point. He was young to be settling down. Only twenty four and just finished his graduate studies at university. His post at the Domino museum studying and restoring old documents was his very first job in the field. The book store, it was his mothers idea more than anything. She did not want her son to starve on just his researchers grants for money. She had loaned him the money for the shop and had convinced through a friend to have the old man sell it to him. Mahaado had no one else except her, but her strong presence in his life seemed to make up for the lack of other family.
He was away from home, not for the first time, but somehow it seemed as if it was permanent this time. Finding Zalika made him feel less lonely here.
Mahaado sat down at the front counter and cracked open the large volume he was half way through. He rather hoped he'd have more customers today. It had been a slow start. But then, it wasn't as if he had much else to do but read anyway and he could very luckily mind his store and read at the same time. His work at the museum was only two days a week and he could even do most of that research here on his laptop. He sighed quietly to himself. It was a peaceful life and he was very glad.
