Chapter Eleven:
‘What will you do if your heart starts beating for the person you hated the most? The person you wanted to kill if you can? A big problem, right? Disaster!’
“Mom, I’m going.” I shouted from the hallway because mom is in the kitchen. I got to check my bag if I have my things to bring-umbrella, don’t want to get sick again, wallet, and my precious cell phone.
“Rin-chan, wait!” Mom exclaimed and came rushing to me. “Please buy a cake before you go home.”
“Eh? Keiki?”
“Yeah, yeah. I just want to eat some, you know.” Mom muttered and let out a laugh. “And also some fruits. I hope they sell some dried mangoes imported in the Philippines.”
I rolled my eyes. “Mom, you’ll get fat if you eat too much.”
Mom shrugged. “It can’t be helped. It’s for the baby.” Then she massaged her tummy.
My jaws dropped. “You’re pregnant?!” Mom smiled at me as an answer. “Really? That’s good! How many months already?”
“Three months.” Mom said happily.
My mouth formed an ‘O’. “That’s why you’re giving me away. You’ll have another baby.” I said pouting. It’s not bad if I do this. I’m still their daughter anyways.
Mom embraced me. “We’re not giving you away, you know. And you’re still our baby.”
I laughed out loud then hugged my mom back. “Then, I’m going.”
I started my way to our meeting place. It was a cake shop. So I think, I buy the cake there for mom. I don’t need to go somewhere else. As I was walking, my phone rang. So I get it from my bag without stopping from walking. When I was about to answer the phone, I bumped to someone. Well, it always happened. The one who bumped me hold me by my shoulders to stop me from falling. “I’m sorry. Are you okay?” the person asked me.
“Yes, I am-” when I saw the face of the person, I was dumbstruck. I think I saw an angel on earth. He has an angelic face… “-okay.”
At first sight, you may think that he is a girl. Maybe that was because he was really handsome that made him looked like one. I never felt this before but the moment I saw him, I already had a crush on him.
He then snapped a finger in front of my face. “Are you really okay?”
That made me went back to reality. I don’t know how long I was staring at him. I pulled myself together and apologize to him. “I’m sorry.”
The guy laughed, yeah! He laughed, Ahh~ music to my ears. “You don’t have to apologize. I am the one who bumped you.”
“No, no.” I countered. “I wasn’t looking on my way that’s why…”
The guy stared at me for moments and I can’t look to his eyes directly. “You’re not Japanese?”
“I am half Filipino-half Japanese.” I said.
“Oh, I see.” He reached out a hand and pinched my cheeks. “Cute.”
“Eh?”
“Bye-bye.” The said then dashed away. Because of the number of people around me, I didn’t even see where he went.
“Weird.” I murmured and touched my own cheeks and I felt my cheeks are burning. Crap, I was blushed that easy? Then my phone rang again. “Hello?”
“Rin-chan? Where are you now?” it was kenichi from the line.
“I am on my way. I’ll be there in a minute or two.” I said and continued walking.
“Okay. I’ll be waiting.”
Just as I expected, I arrived at the Cake Shop in two minutes. When I entered the shop, Kenichi was waving at me. I walked up to him and sat on the vacant seat in front of him. “You’re late, Rin-chan.” He smiled at me.
I chuckled. Whenever we go on dates before, the one who was late should treat. I always get late but Kenichi is the one who treats me. “Then, would you let me treat me some cake?”
“Of course…not. I’ll be the one treating you today.” He ordered two brazo de mercedez cake slices and two cups of coffee. “So what happened when you got home today?”
“I thought my mom would beat me up for not going home last night but she’s not.” I answered.
“Really? How about your dad?”
“Same as my mom. Unbelievable, isn’t it? I thought that my luggage will be waiting outside our door once I got home. That’s what my mom always tell me whenever I get home late before” I chuckled.
“That’s good.” He uttered. Then our orders arrived. After eating and buying a cake for mom, we walked to the park. He toured me around since the place I only knew is my house to school to that cake shop. We did a lot of things like eating on some food stands, visiting the temple, and a lot of places.
“Oh, I was really full.” I said as I massaged my tummy. We have just finished eating takoyaki and I ate a lot. That takoyaki stand really served the best Takoyaki I have ever eaten. We went again to the riverbank.
“I told you their Takoyaki is the best.” He looked at me. “Ne, Rin-chan, tell me more about your school.” He asked as he threw a pebble on the river.
“It’s good. I made friends already. But I think some of my schoolmates don’t like me.” I said as I threw a pebble onto the river, too.
“Why?”
“There are times that when I walked around in the hallway alone, some girls gave me a terrorizing look. As if they liked to kill me. I wonder why?” I said and sat on the steps that lead down the river.
Kenichi sat beside me. “I know that reason why.” I gave him a suspicious look. He just shrugged. “I am a genius anyway.”
I smiled and reached out a hand to pinch his cheek. “I knew that you’re a genius. You don’t have to say to my face you know.”
He laughed. “It’s because you are closed to Kento.”
“So what if I am closed to that asshole?” I was puzzled. So what’s the point? Oh… “Is it because he is an idol?”
Kenichi nodded. “Kento is type of person who doesn’t like to socialize with people he don’t even know. He’s a shy though he’s active and funny person. He knows people first before he makes them as his friends.” I was just staring at him as he continued to talk. “And I was really surprised that you actually made him talked for more than three sentences.” He laughed.
“Are you saying that he just talked a little to stranger? And I made him talked more? Sugoi~”
“Yeah, you’re really amazing. You’re really something.” Kenichi commented and messed my hair. Well, he loved to do it. But I fixed it immediately.
“Kenichi, let’s get serious, can we?” I asked and looked at him seriously.
He took a deep breathe and breathe it out. “I want you to listen to me carefully.” I nodded. “The reason why I didn’t even talk to you that time is that I want to you to forget me.”
The moment I heard that, I was frozen. He wants me to forget him. Why…
He gave me an answer. “Rin-chan, I’m sorry but I want to break up with you.”
I don’t know why but I felt emotionless that time. I didn’t even feel like crying. “Why?”
“The truth is, I was still in love with my first love. I still love her. But the whole time we we’re together, I knew I was in love with you. None of that is fake. But the moment I saw her one month before you arrive, I knew I still love her.” he murmured. As he continued, I looked up in the sky. I knew my tears were about to come out. “I don’t have the guts to tell you this immediately. I don’t want to ruin you since you’re just new to Japan.”
“Do you still love me?” I asked, without leaving my eyes up in the sky.
I didn’t hear an answer for moments. But I think I knew the answer-no. “Well, if that’s what you feel, then I am happy for you.”
He stood up in front of me and pulled me up gently by my hands. “Thank you, Rin-chan.” He whispered before hugging me. “And I am sorry.”
“Don’t worry. I am maybe mad but I can’t do anything about it. I love you,” I whispered.
“Thank you for loving me.” He cupped my face and gave me a kiss on my cheeks, maybe a kiss of goodbye.
