Just because I had to~

I wrote a short 360 word one-shot in response to the accident.  I wrote it in about 5min and it's not that great, but it cheered me up.  Dedicated to sanshinyia

A few weeks ago, it was all over the news.

“Nishikido Ryo causes an accident on a highway.”

My heart had stopped as I stared at the television screen. A million thoughts ran through my head as I reached into my pocket and I dialed his number with trembling fingers.

“Shige,” he began. “I messed up.”

I breathed a sigh of relief when I heard his voice. “You should have called me! I just found out about it on the news.”

“I’m sorry,” he said and I didn’t have to be there to know how exhausted he was.

I was silent for a few moments and tried to calm my racing heart. “You’re okay, aren’t you?”

“I’m fine.”

“How about the person you hit?”

“They say she injured her neck but it’s only minor.”

I knew it wouldn’t go away so easily. When you’re in the spotlight, simple things like walking with a girl at night cause a big commotion. When it involves the police, you can bet that it will be everywhere.

“It’ll be okay, Ryo.”

“Really? How is it okay? I can’t drive for 6 months, I hurt someone and the news is everywhere.”

“Today’s news will fade away soon. You said she's not seriously hurt.  It’s not like you killed someone.”

“Don’t joke about things like that - please.”

“It was just an accident. As famous as you are, you’re still human.”

He was silent.

“Where are you?”

I may not have known then what was going to happen with everything, but I knew I had to see him.

Now, 2 weeks later, we walk along the streets that are less popular and we are bundled up in hats, scarves and big sunglasses in an attempt to hide our identities.

It’s not talked about as much anymore. He was scolded by countless people and he is still upset about not being able to drive, but I can’t help that. He has to deal with it in his own way, and all I can do is be here for him.

Once we arrive at a near-empty street, I reach over and take his hand out of his pocket and hold it in mine.

“Walking isn’t so bad,” I say.

He squeezes my hand and smiles.
