It's one of the many cases where grammarians cannot agree. It is, in fact, an introductory phrase and as such should be separated with punctuation; however, the debate rolls on. It's cute that you took the time out to comment on this...

i was just being a smartass, silly girl. i saw that you put a comma there and immediately remembered your complaint that dr. stryker says there shouldn't be commas after those sort of phrases. neener neener! :)
