On the first pic you can see the road which was formerly used by the East German border guard's jeeps. This was a few meters behind "The Wall" (which was actually a fence, in the south of West-Berlin) . The wild "forest" in the pics exists only since the opening of The Wall (here: "just" a fence, as mentioned above). Before, the whole area behind the border fence was just plain sand, with control towers every (circa) 100 meters. . And the wide fields in Berlin's south (see last pic) were (since 1876 and until the late 1960's) used as sewage fields for the city of Berlin.
