Comments: This book is about the culture clash between humans and an alien species called the hwarhath, who have a completely gender-segregated society. (Everyone thinks everyone else's cultural practices are absolutely appalling.)

The book is told from two alternating POVs. One is Anna Perez, a human woman who was studying possibly intelligent alien life forms, and stumbled into the whole situation by meeting the second POV character, Nicholas Sanders, who was on-planet for diplomatic negotiations. Nick is a human who was captured by the hwarhath 20 years ago and is now working for them as a translator. And he's also romantically involved with the hwarhath general, Ettin Gwarha.

Nick's history with the hwarhath alone could fill a whole archive full of fic, and that's just one half of the story.

Okay, this already sounds awesome, and then that reappreciation article calls it "Jane Austen in space"?!

O_O do want.

Thanks so much for bringing this into the limelight!

Yay! The Reappreciation article is really spot on in just about every way, and I'm so glad the description appeals to you. I'm sure you'll love the book if those themes speak to you.

It's such an amazing book, and I only found it because someone on my flist had stumbled across it. I couldn't believe I'd never heard of it! And I still can't quite believe there's not even Yuletide fic for it. (Yet.)
