Originally, her family was from the Island of Hod. During the Hod War, however, it was completely destroyed. Due to Van using one of Yulia's Hymns, he as able to protect her mother and the unborn baby that resided in her womb. The island itself fell into the qliphoth while her mother was pregnant with her at that time into the world that was under Auldrant’s crust, filled with miasma, a liquid substance that was known to as a poison if inhaled too much over a short period of time. She is also considered a descendant of Yulia because of her unique ability to understand and use the hymns that were unable to used by others. Tear was raised in Yulia city by her only brother, Vandesdelca Musto Fende, known as Van, as well as Mayour Teordoro of Yulia City, had adopted Tear as his granddaughter.
Van allowed Tear to train with Legretta, and that was how Tear became a soldier, by the teachings of the Majour, who was also Van's second in command. Tear later becomes a soldier of the Order of Lorelei. At first her only reason to go through with training was to be able to be strong enough to work side by side with her brother as Legretta also mentioned during their training. She was enlisted as a Sergeant of the Oracle Knights Intelligence Division, a section that presides over the Score. Tear has hardly any feminine traits, but somewhere deep within her she carries that female posture that is shown through her love of cute things. Tear is also a Seventh Fonist, as well.
When she started to catch onto her brother's secretive deeds, so she took the assignment in the Outer lands, to locate and bring information on the Seventh Fonstone. When she did get out to the outer lands, Tear tried to assassinate Van, but ended up in collision at the Manor of Duke Fabre and with his eldest and only son Luke Fon Fabre. When the collision was made, they set off a hyper resonance, that sent both of them to the Tataroo Valley.
She found Luke to be an irritating and annoying brat, who had been confined to his manor most his life, and has no idea what the outside world was like. Tear and Luke traveled together to get back to Kimlasca, due to Tear's slight mistake. As the time progresses, Tear Realizes that her brother was planning on eliminating the original Auldrant in order to bring one created and ruled by Replicas. Tear was forced to fight her brother on opposing sides and against the God Generals, and aided her was Luke, Jade Curtiss, the Malkuth soldier who was known to have created the theory of Fomicry, Guy Cecil, house Fabre's servant and Luke's best friend for life, Anise Tatlin, a puppet master, and a Fon Master Guardian, Fon Master Ion, and Princess Natalia of Kimlasca, and together they went through hardships and obstacles in order to get to Van.
During that time, Tear slowly learned more and more of her brother’s plan, that it was just ludicrous to continue with it, as well as one of the people that stood between her and Van was the God General, Legretta the Quick, who was Tear’s old mentor, her sister and mother figure. Legretta had attempted many times to bring Tear to their side, but it was futile, because Tear had seen things differently, and through watching Luke change gradually, that people could change, and the Score was not absolute. People could live away from it, and it was obvious. The beliefs of her brothers, and her mentor were quite different from hers. Their goals were the same, but the steps on getting to that change was different beyond belief.
Tear and Luke share a mutual disdain for one another. Luke sometimes regards Tear as being bossy, or annoying, and Tear thinks of Luke as a brat. Though, when Luke promised to change himself, and asked Tear to watch over him, Tear slowly starts becoming infatuated with the red head. As she watched him change and become a better person, she soon grew attached him, silently, though never admitting it, Tear truly did like Luke a lot more than she realized, but the both of them are too stubborn, and Luke is too dense to realize that Tear cared for him differently from all his friends. Their bond is strong as many could tell, and anything that involved Luke and his situation, was very sensitive on Tear’s case.
When in the last battle with Van, Tear realized that Van had told her everything from the start, while singing the Yulia's hymns to Tear, Van was telling her from the very start about everything. Tear had also spoken her last words to Luke for the time being. She had managed to utter the words "I love you," to him as a farewell, and a promise he had made to return. When Luke appears again, at least physically, Tear was surprised at first, but eventually, she would start to cry, letting the water works go. That was the only time she had ever cried in front of all her companions. Though if that red haired man is Luke or not, it was not said. I suppose we can all assume if it is, or isn't. The game doesn't explain it very well, but if you do the side quests it should be obvious.
[ Personality ] :
Usually, Tear is seen as a rather serious and cold person. She displays little emotions at the beginning of the game, even though she was clearly concerned with Luke’s well being, she didn’t seem to be showing too much concern, only enough. She tries to hid her emotions and bottles them up as much as possible. It was due to Legretta’s training on how she could not show emotions to people. If she was unable to do that, she was unfit to be the ideal ‘soldier.’ Tear is obsessed with the fact of being an 'Ideal' Soldier that Legretta wanted. Legretta is believed to be blamed for Tear's cold and emotionless demeanor, even through the supposed death of her borther Van Grants, Tear's usual mask cracked, but she never shed a tear. Even though, she puts up a strong physical appearance and emotions, she is quite vulnerable to certain emotions. She displays them clearly enough. Tear has a weakness for cute things such as adorable animals, or something cute, such as the maid uniform at the Duke’s Manour.
She often never shows that side, but it comes out every now and then. Tear has a soft spot for Mieu, because he was a small, fluffy Cheagle, that seemed to be rather cute to her eyes. She is also very modest about herself. Tear doesn’t like to talk about her body, or wear too much revealing clothes. When people crack jokes about her body, for example, the skit with Anise, where the teenager wanted to have a well developed body like Tear’s and Luke intervenes saying that she would never have a body like that and upon Anise’s words at wanting big ‘melons,’ Tear gets embarrassed and scolds them. Despite her strong front, Tear is quite innocent. She would get flustered at simple jokes such as the one involving the Luke and Anise in the skit about her body. She is very self conscious about herself in all ways and forms. She often becomes very embarrassed if anyone were to speak of her body.
Tear refused to cry no matter what, and throughout the game, she sees a lot of painful things and grows depressed from them, but never did she break down, or crack a tear, even if it was her brother that was killed. Tear tries to be strong and holds up to her ‘ideal’ soldier face. Tear has a strangely growing affection towards Luke during the game, as you can see as the time progresses in Abyss. At first it was ore of like a sister/motherly form of affection, but it eventually changes as the game progresses. Tear becomes less harsh with Luke and scolding him at times that he needed to be scolded for reckless actions. She is much nicer to him, when she realizes his situation and such. She promised to watch him as well. She had shown her pain and sadness many times near the end of the game, as said in the background, she is quite sensitive to things that involved Luke and his life. She was angry and sad at the same time, when Teordoro, King Ingobert, and Emperor Peony, considered that Luke should die to neutralize the miasma that was surrounding all of Auldrant.
On another note, Tear is easily scared by Ghosts. Anything nonexistence in body or form floats in a creepy manner or even a story about a crying woman in the mountains will make Tear freak out beyond belief. She will try to cover it up and remain serious about it, though it would only last so long before someone points it out to her that she's afraid of ghosts. Tear is also someone capable of killing a she is protecting. She protects civilians and keeps them safe as a soldier, but at the same time she is also capable of killing without a blink of an eye when her life is threatened. Tear tries to explain to Luke once that it was either they killed the enemy or the enemy killed them. It is how people survive, even if it does sound quite cruel.

Usually one wouldn't be dreaming of nothing, but this maiden sure was. There wasn't anything in her sight, at least the moment. She was standing in the middle of nowhere, darkness surrounded her like a blanket. Each step she made, was loud and clear, her own breathing was heard louder than it should be. Strange, the maiden though to herself as she looked around.
"Luke?" her voice echoed in the dark space, "Anise, Colonel?" and there was nothing to respond to her. Tear kept walking. Her eyes were focused on the dark space, trying to find where she was going. There were no paths, no trees, nothing, only a mere empty space of darkness that she trailed, almost like she was floating. At least she felt that way.
A silhouette came into view. AT first she couldn't make it out, but when she got closer and closer, the person became clearer and clearer. It was Van, her brother.
"Nii-san?"
She was breathless. He was dead, wasn't he? His hand reached out towards her, a grim look on his face, almost ushering to take that hand. What did it mean? She was hesitant, "You're suppose to be..." she trailed off. It still felt a bit painful t find out he already died. From her memory he was still alive, but now the knowledge that he is dead, well, it wasn't hitting her hard until this moment. The hand still reached out to her waiting for her to take.
She slowly reached out her arm, finally, after a long silence, only the man kept fading backwards, and she followed, and soon she was running after it, but it was complicated to catch up. She kept breathing, running. Why couldn't she touch his hand?
The man turned back, looked at her, and briefly a soft look on his face. Then it vanished, into nothing. She left alone once more.
[The fonist woke up with cold sweat down her form, her eyes were slightly diluted, and her hands were clenching on what seemed to be the sheets of her bed. What meaning had that dream held? She was getting accustomed to them, but the impact of them was just... too much to handle.]
