Broken

He crumpled the picture in his hands and a strangled scream from the depths of his soul broke out of his mouth. As an indescribable pain ripped through his body, he fell to the floor and desperately tried to breathe.

This couldn’t happen. No, it was not possible.

But he was holding the proof in his hand.

His Tomohisa…he had lost him.

He was not his any longer.

Lying on the floor, he panted and let the tears flow freely. He knew it. He had lost something that was irreplaceable. He had lost the love of his life.

When his muscles started to protest, he moved slightly and sat up. He straightened the crumpled picture he had held in his fist and looked at the three people in it.

A woman, a little baby…and Tomohisa. The other had a family now. Was married…with a woman.

A cold laugh ripped out of him and he could barely remain seated. It was all so hilarious! Who would ever have thought that the guy who had been known for being gay to the roots in High school was married now? Yamashita Tomohisa was married. How incredibly ridiculous.

He turned the picture and there stood in the all so familiar messy writing: “I am happy now. I hope you are, too.”

How could he be happy? The only person he had ever loved had gotten married without him knowing.

Jumping to his feet, he grabbed his car keys and got out of his flat. There was somewhere he needed to be.

The address of the other was written on the envelope the other had sent the picture in. He was going to find him.

When he arrived he looked around curiously. It was a nice neighbourhood with pretty front gardens and little children playing together on the street. The perfect place to have a family.

He walked along the streets and counted the house numbers, but he halted when he saw a familiar figure sit on a bench, holding a little bundle in his arms.

“She resembles you.”

Tomohisa’s eyes were wide as he looked at him.

“Ryo…what are you doing here?”

“Asking you whether I am too late?”

The other looked incredulous at him and that look alone told him he had come in vain.

“Ryo, I am married, I have a daughter and I am living a respectable life. What makes you think I would even be interested in you?” He had never seen Tomohisa’s eyes so cold. It made him shudder and feel cold even though the warm summer sun was shining down on them.

“I…because we are connected by a strong love.” He stood straight, not budging under Tomohisa’s cold stare.

He needed the other to feel complete. He had been an idiot, he admitted that, but he wanted another chance. He loved Tomohisa so much, always had.

“I don’t know what love you are talking about.” Tomohisa stood up abruptly, hugging his daughter close and turned to leave.

“I love you!” He screamed it as loud as he could and the other stopped moving, but didn’t turn around.

“And I hate you for saying this.” Without sparing the other a further glance Tomohisa walked back to his house…and family.

It hurt; it hurt so much. Who did this guy think he was? After all this time, after all what had happened, he still had the guts to come to him and tell him he wanted to get back together? Angry tears ran down his cheeks as he tried to control his emotions.

He had suffered so much because of him and now after he had given up on them and found a new life, he came and told him he loved him?

Ryo was not fair.

Years ago he had begged him to love him, to say it. All Ryo had said was that he needed time. After five years of being together Ryo had said he needed a break and that he had to get clear about his feelings. He knew Ryo had trouble to get to terms with his sexual orientation and it still horrified the other whenever they got intimate or simply kissed. He was afraid of being gay.

They had parted and he had believed they were meant to be. He had known and loved the other for so long. They first had met in kindergarten. It was fate…or so he had believed, till Ryo disappeared to go to a far away university and studied. The other had cut all ties and told him to wait.

Still, now he felt ridiculous for having waited for three years, until he had given in to his father and married the daughter of an important business partner. It was not love. He had not been sure if his heart had still been able to feel or if it was dead. So it had not really been a big deal for him whether he got married or not. It was not like his wife loved him. She had as much interested in him as he in her and he had seen her lover once.

Nevertheless, he had responsibilities. One of them being his lovely daughter he had committed himself to. She was his sunshine and the only reason to go on. She deserved to grow up in a normal family…as normal as he could make it and this certainly did not involve Ryo.

Even though the other had just now painfully showed him that his heart was still alive. Beating traitorously in his chest, as Ryo had said he loved him. Making him want to turn back and return to the man, he never stopped loving.

“Ne, do you want to play Ryoko-chan?”
