He never complained about their school lunch - it's cheap and nutritious, his mother once said. But he was not enthusiastic about bloating himself with gargantuan amount food like his friends so he never participated in the janken tournament for that extra box of milk when a student was absent, for the last slice of high grade melon, for the last piece of fried pork gyoza, for that last cup of vanilla ice cream, or even for that last piece of the popular, tasty agepan. He let his classmates go crazy over those.
But today was his birthday and their school lunch was his favorite dish of all time: hamburger steak in tomato mushroom sauce and so he went to the corner where the janken will take place after finishing his fastest meal yet and was relying on his birthday luck to get him that juicy patty.
He lost to Subaru-kun on his first try.
Sighing, he went back to his place and started opening empty the milk carton. He already got a perfect score on his math exam and got praised by Matsumoto-sensei during their music class. He couldn't possibly receive everything even if it was his birthday.
On the background, he could hear his friend, Aiba-chan, rejoicing about the fact that he won three days in a row. Nino couldn't help smiling at his friend for being proud of the miraculous moments like this. At least one of them was happy.
And then his empty plate was taken away from him.
"Hey!" Nino shouted but was surprised that Aiba was taking his plate where the food was placed.
"Ohno-sensei! Aiba-chan is going to give his hamburger steak to Nino!" Sho-kun, the ever responsible, ever gluttonous classmate slash class representative of the day of his protested about this unfair setup.
“But it’s Nino-chan’s birthday and hamburger steaks are his favorite!” Aiba reasoned.
They were arguing verbally for a while that even their English teacher, Becky-sensei, who happened to eat with them today, was now asking his classmate about what’s happening.
Ohno-sensei looked contemplative before he stood up and cleared his throat for the announcement.
“You won the janken, Aiba-san. You get to decide who could eat it unless of course, Ninomiya-san doesn’t like to eat. Would you like to eat the hamburger steak, Ninomiya-san?”
All eyes were on him then including Aiba’s (who was shocked at first as if he didn’t even think that Nino might not like it but then quickly recovered and was pleading with his puppy stare.)
“I’d take it.” Nino said to Ohno-sensei while the rest of his classmates didn’t even protest. Aiba rejoiced with a “Yay!” whilst serving the last piece of meat on Nino’s plate.
“Here. Happy Birthday!” Aiba beamed as he handed Nino’s plate.
“Don’t think that you could get away without getting me a proper gift.” Nino told Aiba without heat.
“Should I sing you a happy birthday song then? Or would you prefer Becky-sensei’s signature?” Aiba asked, although Nino knew that Aiba was just messing with him.
“You’re still treating me to a Gari gari-kun later.” Nino grumbled as he stabbed his hamburger steak and munched it in exaggeration.
Aiba only laughed as he retreated back to his chair, while Nino savored one of the tastiest hamburger steaks he had in memory.
