When you act as a human shield for someone, you can't really think about the pain. Because if you do, you would never do it.
It is a split second decision - there isn't time to think. I am scared - really scared - the father that raised me, pointing a gun at the father that should have raised me.
Pop.
The noise sounds strangely hollow, like a fire cracker going off. For the first half a second, my mind doesn't compute what is happening. Then the pain hits and it's like fire burning the thousands of nerves in my whole body. I open my mouth in shock.
It hurts. It hurts more than the first time, when Nana shot me. My father's aim was true.
Pain brings me to my knees and the ground rises up to meet me. Dimly, I realise I was bleeding out, the blood seeping through my clothes and onto the floor. My lungs struggle for air. Pain paralyses me and I couldn't move.
I just stared helplessly as my father's body is viciously impaled by a hail of bullets. As he lay dying, he smiled - he smiled, damn it, for what seemed like the first time in his life.
At. Me.
He is reaching for me. And I... I want to reach for him, to connect with him... just this once. A tear oozes out of my eye as our bloodied hands grasp. I struggle to hold on... but then blackness claims me.
