Basics of Photoshop and Avatar/Icon Base tips

I call 100x100 icons "avatars" because the friend who hooked me into graphic making calls it so, but everyone else seems to refer to them as icons. *shrugs*First off, I am currently using CS2, but it shouldn’t be that different. If there are a few parts that stray off to nowhere for 7.0 users, drop a comment and I’ll try to help out
