Chinen and strawberries (Sweet Valentine)

Valentine’s Day, what all couples have been looking forward for ages.

Yamada sat on the park’s bench, of course, waiting for his lover to arrive. It was Valentine’s Day and he spent the whole week planning for a lovely date for both of them.

While waiting for Chinen, Yamada took the opportunity to relax his mind after the whole busy week. He looked around and saw massive of lovey-dovey couples around him. Unexpectedly, it did not annoy him. Not at all. In fact, he smiled at the sight as he knew that he would enjoy as much as they did once his one and only lover arrived.

He has been waiting for some time, yet there was no sign of Chinen. He looked around again, now craving for some strawberries. It was one of Yamada’s habits. When he is frustrated, anxious, angry, depressed or even feeling unsecured, he needs strawberries to calm him down.

Well, although he loves strawberries THAT much, he is very picky with them. He only eats big, juicy and sweet strawberries but not for those sour ones. Hell no. If there is no other choice, he will definitely need something sweet to eat with it. Anything sweet. Sugar, sweets, creams, chocolates or even… Chinen.

This Valentine’s Day, Yamada did not ask for any chocolates. In fact, he asked for strawberries. Having the thought that Chinen would later arrived with a box of juicy strawberries, Yamada smiled and thought that it worth waiting for it.

Sigh. The boy exhaled some air and threw his head backwards to rest it on the bench. Strawberries did bring lots of memories for him and Chinen.

Yamada was running up and down in his house, throwing and turning everything over looking for his strawberries. It was during the exam week and Yamada had his nerves up. He needed strawberries and he needed them BAD. Still, the strawberries were nowhere to be found and no one else was in the house to help him solve that problem of his life.

Out of frustration, Yamada took out his phone and typed a message, ‘STUPID STRAWBERRIES, WHERE THE HECK ARE YOUUU???!!!’

He did not even care who he sent it to as he just chose the first number. He really needed to let out what was in his mind.

In less than 15 seconds, his phone rang. As he was still busy looking for his precious strawberries, he made and irritated “Ugh!” and took his phone out to receive a one word message, ‘Here!’

“Huh?” was his first reaction as he frowned, did not even know what it was all about. Still not getting any chance to read who replied that message of his, he heard the door bell ringing.

“Chinen?” Yamada was surprised when he opened the door. He did not expect Chinen to be here, especially during the exam week.

The smaller boy returned Yamada’s ‘question mark’ with a wide grin. He held his hands up with a bucket full of strawberries, “Will this cheer you up?”

Yamada returned the sweet grin as he happily grabbed the bucket of strawberries from Chinen, leaving a small peck on the latter’s right cheek as an appreciation. “Thank you, Chi.” Yamada giggled and left the blushing boy at the door way. Palming on his own cheek, “I-I’m coming in.” Chinen startled, walking in the house with his face lowered.

Yamada gave a snicker remembering the scene. Chinen’s relatives got them some strawberries and he especially took it to Yamada and stayed till evening, helping him with his studies.

Yamada looked out to the open field and hoped to see Chinen, but the other boy did not show up. “Strawberries…” Yamada mumbled, slightly pouting, he sighed again, closing his eyes. He always believed that the cheerful little sunshine would be alright no matter what.

Yamada merely choked, coughing loud, “Blakkkk! Uwaaa! Darn you strawberries! I spent my money on you to make my day better and you gave me this kind of sour taste?? Can’t you be more understanding??!!”

“Yama-chan, are you okay?” Chinen suddenly popped his head out beside Yamada. He rested his head on the table, looking up innocently at the slightly elder boy.

“No.” Yamada’s answer was short and simple, “And now I got all those strange taste in my mouth. Blughh-“ He complained, frowning as he tucked his tongue out.

Out of a sudden, Chinen leaned forward and pressed his lips on Yamada’s, passing a piece of chocolate to Yamada, mouth to mouth. Chinen was the one blushing afterwards, though.

“Di-did that make it better..?” Chinen, too shy to speak properly while Yamada was still stunned in his position with the piece of chocolate melting in his mouth. He was shocked and never expects Chinen to do such a thing, especially when it was their first kiss.

Looking at Chinen whining like a little girl, Yamada chuckled, “Definitely.” He tilted Chinen’s chin higher and gave him another kiss on the lips.

Chinen was speechless when they parted while Yamada was smirking, “And there’re still some more strawberries that I am not sure if it’s as sweet as you to satisfy me.”

Yamada squealed remembering all those sweet memories they shared. But seriously, Chinen was a bit too late for a date, especially on Valentine’s Day. Yamada stood up to further his view. Where could Chinen be? If there’s anything, he can just drop a call, right?

Couples around Yamada were getting lesser as people headed to other places. Chinen? Late? On a Valentine’s date? Yamada could not clear his mind. He bent his body forward, elbows on his knees as he started biting his own lips. Did anything happened?

Yamada’s patience was almost out as he stood and was ready to go look for some strawberries. He was desperately craving for some strawberries at that moment.  Still, just as he took out his phone, he saw something running towards his direction, a small figure waving towards him. Yamada frowned and narrowed his eyes to take a better view on it. Finally, he noticed that it was the one he had been waiting for.

“Mou, Chinen! You’re late!”  Yamada pouted, turning his head away and not facing Chinen as the younger arrived. “Oh well.” he smirked, “I’ll forgive you if you passed me those strawberries.” Giggling, Yamada turned over and was shocked at the view.

Chinen was panting, and when he looked up at Yamada, he was crying. No, there were no tears dripping, but they were glimmering in his eyes. Yamada knew it. Even if the tears were not being obvious, Yamada knew that his boyfriend was crying.

“Ch-Chi! What happened?? Why are you crying??” Yamada did not know what to do, he knew he had to comfort the other boy but he just did not know how.

Tears started rolling down on Chinen’s cheek, “So-Sorry. Yama-chan, I’m sorry.” Chinen sniffed, rubbing his nose, “I-I tried to look for strawberries bu-but *sniff* I can’t find it anywhere. The-they were out of stock and-and I tried to reach here earlier but there was a road repairing section and it was unexpected and  I-I..”

“Calm down, Chi..” Yamada was worried. He softly rubbed off the tears on Chinen’s cheek with his thumbs, “Talk slowly. Don’t rush. It’s okay Chi.”

“And, and I’m still unable to get you any strawberries, I’m sorry Yama-chan! I’m so sorry! Our Valentine is ruined just because of me!” Chinen was wailing.

Yamada squeezed his eyebrow. His heart ached seeing Chinen blaming everything on himself. Without a second thought, he held Chinen tight in his arms, pressing the younger’s head on his shoulder and let him cry He did not care if anyone was looking at them, he just wanted to make sure Chinen felt warm and secured by any chance.

There's no substitute for a boyfriend..
None..
No one.
Nothing.

Not even a strawberry..
Will a strawberry answers your text?
Of course not.

Only a friend can listen..
Only a friend can understand...

And no matter how you crave for strawberries in times of depression,
a real friend is still the sweetest sugar-coated thing existing that could cheer you up..

Thanks for being one.
No matter how much I love strawberries,
I still love you more.

Yamada smiled. He did not know where that poem came from but it just came out from nowhere in his mind.

Yamada separated their hug so that he could look at Chinen closely. The other boy was still crying with his eyes closed, mumbling something like, “I’m sorry.”

The boy smiled again. He ran his fingers through Chinen’s hair and pushed his fridge aside so that his eyes were clearly shown. Slowly, he leaned forward and gently licked away those tears.

Yamada held Chinen’s head firmed between his palms and stared at his boyfriend. “Chinen… you know what?”

The little one stopped sobbing and slowly opened his eyes and looked into Yamada’s.

Yamada gave a refreshing smile, “I love you. So much.” Chinen was confused as he titled. They would not be couples if they did not love each other at the first place, right?

Yamada chuckled seeing Chinen’s reaction, “Happy Valentine’s Day. Thanks for loving me.” He ended his conversation with another kiss.

Chinen blinked once, twice, and shut his eyes, decided just to accept everything as he clenched tighter on Yamada’s clothes.

There’ll be nothing else in this world that I would love as much as you.
